Any time a man in its nineties decides to write a memoir, we have an opportunity for wisdom and insight. And here is the memoir of a truly exceptional man, whose long life has brought him into contact with other truly exceptional people and events. From the notes on the back of the book: "An embodiment of the "Greatest Generation," Archbishop Hannan's wit, generosity, and work ethic were unparalleled --- as he spoke out against fascism, stood up for his faith, and negotiated the pitfalls of politics." During my years in New Orleans, I knew Archbishop Hannan to be an remarkably gracious and interesting man, much loved by the diocese of which he was Archbishop, much appreciated by generations of Catholics in that most unusual of southern cities. I've been waiting a long time for this compelling and fascinating story. This is a book to be thoroughly enjoyed, and given as a gift: the memoir of brave World War II soldier, a devoted friend of the Kennedys, a witness to the great events surrounding Vatican II, a great churchman.

The Most Reverend Philip Hannan, former Archbishop of New Orleans, was born in 1913, and was an altar-boy at the Requiem Mass for Edward Douglass White. This was only the beginning of his participation in nearly a century of great events.

Hannan was in St Peter's Square for the coronation of Venerable Pope Pius XII, in 1939. His estimation of that controversial Pontiff: "Though absolutely opposed to Hitler's reign of terror, his policy of avoiding provocative condemnations of the Nazis, at the behest of Jewish groups, actually waylaid further persecution."

This autobiography opens, however, with Hannan's delivery of the eulogy at the Requiem of John F. Kennedy, and his friendship with the Kennedy family is here fully revealed for the first time. And fascinating it is. He feels the President (whom he served as an advisor on eccesiastical matters) was a "cultural" Catholic (and Hannan knew nothing then of his reported adultery), but his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, was the devout one. For the latter, Hannan performed the Rite of Interment. And, many years later, he presided over the burial of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Hannan was a chaplain during World War II (hence the title), and was one of the Council Fathers at the Second Vatican Council. He examines the collapse of the liturgy following Vatican II: "Unfortunately, the prediction that Mass in English would bring many more people to church was way off target. It was the greatest surprise--or disappointment--to find that it emptied many pews in our churches." He also laments that, in music, "the guitar took over," despite the mandate that the pipe organ and Gregorian Chant were to be prominent. "The interpretation was unbelievable.

There's nothing like history, especially contemporary history, that reads like great adventure. The Archbishop was a hero, and that's saying something about a contemporary Roman Catholic clergyman. Excellently written! Super story! Whether you lived through Vietnam and Camelot or not, you will love this page turner. Move over, Hammond Innes and Alistair McLean! Make way for Nancy Collins -- who's better looking than you, too. Archbishop Philip Hannan is one of the most beloved leaders in New Orleans. But long before he came here after Hurricane Betsy, he led an extraordinary life. In addition to being on the front lines in WWII as a combat chaplain, he had a birds-eye view, and sometimes a hand, in some extraordinary historical events. The book is well-written and offers an insite into history, the Catholic Church, and an indomitable human spirit that has served the archbishop and New Orleans well. A must read!

This is not a "religious" book but a fantastically interesting read about the life of a gifted man coming from a big loving working class Irish family in Washington, DC. It is unbelievably rich in detail and background of the times it spans. Great insight into how things were in our past history. Hollywood could not have written a more profound and intensely interesting story.

Not finished with it yet, but great book about a great man. Archbishop Hannan was very loved by the people of New Orleans for decades-Catholic and non-Catholic alike. Very interesting story of his journey through the priesthood and his love for his adopted city of New Orleans

This was an amazing story in that a dedicated priest had relationships with so many important and famous people while serving the "regular" folks in his community. A great story of heroism, dedication, and faith in God and humankind. A great read.
