Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Architecting the Cloud was written to fill a void that existed when I started building my first cloud application back in 2008. Each chapter provides insights gained through my experiences, both things I got right and things I got wrong. My hope is that by sharing these experiences and providing a list of design considerations in a variety of areas of concern, my readers can make more precise design decisions and not have to rely as much on trial and error as I did when I first started. Cloud computing can offer tremendous benefits such as increased speed to market, lower total cost of ownership, and greater flexibility if designed correctly, but there are no silver bullets. To achieve these benefits, a pragmatic approach is required. This book aims to arm the reader with a long list of design considerations to help the reader achieve the goals that the cloud promises.

From the Inside Flap

ARCHITECTING THE CLOUD

Design Decisions for Cloud Computing Service Models (SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS)

Providing decision makers with the pros and cons of each service model from the viewpoint of a consumer of cloud services, Architecting the Cloud is essential reading for any decision maker starting the vendor selection and development process for their cloud computing initiative. Author Michael Kavis presents you with an arsenal of design decisions to contemplate and highlights the critical areas of concern that all cloud architectures must contend with.

Guiding corporations through significant design considerations, Architecting the Cloud discusses the pros and cons of each cloud service model and highlights major design considerations in areas such as security, data storage, monitoring, APIs, and more. This timely book arms you with enough information to choose the right cloud service provider with guidance on:

  • The evolution of cloud computing
  • Cloud service models
  • How to avoid failure when moving to the cloud
  • Selecting the appropriate technologies and vendors
  • The importance of a pragmatic approach to architecture
  • Choosing the right cloud service model
  • The key to the cloud
  • Auditing in the cloud
  • Data considerations in the cloud
  • Security design in the cloud
  • Disaster recovery planning

The future of cloud computing can finally bring IT and the business closer together if its architects can select the proper service model so IT can focus less on IT’s needs and more on business goals. Read Architecting the Cloud and discover how to set the direction for your business’s cloud initiatives.

Excellent book providing insight about how you should approach cloud development and what you should be aware of. It does a great job of outlining in what way a cloud application differs from a traditional application and why you should not simply port existing code to the cloud.

The book provided a strong introduction to the cloud world. That being said the focus of the book is really on the high level, you will not receive details on how Amazon has configured its cloud service outside of explanations of what IaaS / PaaS is. And you know what - that is ok - this is a good introduction to the topic of cloud computing.

The AWS books (i.e. Amazon Web Services for Dummies) are too technical - this book has a good niche.

I would recommend this for the project manage that wants to learn a little bit about cloud - or the architect that is coming over from a different field (i.e. security or networking) and likes to start at the very beginning.

That being said - this isn't a "dummies book to cloud" - its further along than that. You sill need to understand architecture and other advanced computing topics to get the full value of the book

It's hard finding objective, realistic advice on all things cloud but the author has done a very good job of doing just that. After the first few chapters it became very obvious the author had a lot of experience within corporate IT not just startups. That is a critical piece for those of us in the corporate IT environment where advice on the cloud usually comes from pundits, vendors and others far removed from the reality of the challenges enterprise IT shops face. There is no technology bias or vendor bias in the book and although the author has a lot of experience with AWS he does not try and sell it for all your solutions.

The book takes you through a roadmap and foundational concepts about how to approach your applications and the cloud whether you are in enterprise IT or a nice greenfield startup. Some of the concepts are available in other places but you will be hard pressed to fine a more concise ordered guide. The author also provides lots of references to other information throughout the chapters.

There are a lot of concepts covered including Rest based API's, Cloud Types, Devops, Security and Compliance (really good) as well as organization impacts. You will probably discover as I did about half way through the book that 99.9 of the stuff that is covered is a great foundation for a modern enterprise IT shop whether headed to the cloud or not. I ended up bookmarking about a million things which is always a good sign.

I've done three enterprise IT cloud projects and I sorely wish I would have had this book before starting them. Although I'm going back to explore some of the chapters in more detail, the book was easy to get through in a weekend. I highly recommend reading it.

I have enjoyed this book very very much. The main reason is author has significant background on IT, SW Development, SW Delivery & Deployment and also as importantly on business of delivering the IT Solutions to market by utilizing the Cloud.

Attention: Please Be Aware That This is NOT a Bible/Tutorial/Course Book.

It is rather a "Experience Talks!" style written, well organized full of recommendations on "Business Living With & In the Cloud". If you like see a diary of a Cloud SW Delivery Manager with insights of development side, business side, organizational management side this book is a "Must" to read.

I bought this book because it has chapters on cloud security -- issue #1 for many of us. And it really delivered. The author clearly has deep experience in this area, and it shows.

But it's also a very good general book about the cloud. Kavis is able to step back and talk about issues in ways that are really helpful on a number of levels.

Very helpful. I've consulted it a number of times since the purchase.

If you are looking for a book gives you technical insight and knowledge , it is not your book! it is only good for 30000 feet information like reading a magazine for your knowledge upgrade; it talks about high level scenarios and where(not how) to use each one of the Cloud computing components. I'd rather to see something more technology or architecture connected contexts . when you read this book it looks like it afraid to touch the Architecture or solutions in practice OR how it can be tied up with all these scenarios. but its good for the beginners. also paper quality is poor.

I really enjoyed the leading chapters and providing a concrete example really helped. The book got a little bit dry in the security section, but came back at the end. I found myself doing research on some of the tools mentioned in the book while reading it, that really helped me make my jump from enterprise to the cloud. Overall well worth the read.

Great overview of what to look for and what to avoid in moving to a cloud architecture. While getting a bit dated in some of the information, the design principles are sound and so are the use cases. It does not get too deep into the technical areas, which allows it to be useful for management and C levels as well as technically focused people just getting started into cloud computing.

Also short enough for people who are terminally busy to finish.

Written with honesty with proper justice to all the chapters. Author has a very broad industry knowledge right from top level to bottom which is evident in his writing. Author writes not everything would vouch for cloud computing but can be achieved through private or hybrid cloud model. Cloud computing is "pay-as-you-go" which advertise cost saving model, but caveat is the right architecture should in place which would translate business objective correctly. Its a media buzz where everyone wants to move to cloud without giving a thought to current underlying architecture and they end up in failure. Chapter on SLA was a surprise and very well covered and same goes to all chapters. It is a must read who want to venture in Cloud computing.
