After trying several of the "police" knit caps and finding their quality comparable to something you'd find at Wal-mart, I decided to look outside of the box for the next contestant. That's when I stumbled across the Arc'teryx Classic beanie.
After reading several reviews on Amazon, I decided to give Arc'teryx their shot. Lucky enough, the beanie arrived just in time to accompany me on my most recent rotation to night shift. While temperatures rarely fall under the low 30's (F) in my area, wind chill and the fact that we're surrounded by salt water makes it seem much colder. Even so, this hat has done its job in keeping my head toasty warm. Much warmer, in fact, than it's cheaper competitors. I've also found that it fits even my larger-than-average head well, completely covering my ears with no problems. Speaking of ears, there is also a reinforced band of soft material which surrounds them inside of the hat, adding to both comfort and warmth. Lastly, I was pleasantly surprised that the Arc'teryx logo on my black beanie was actually a subdued gray, instead of white as it appears in the picture. Anyone who has had to concern themselves with stealth or night time operations will be pleased with that fact as well.
In the end, it looks Arc'teryx has earned a place in my kit. In fact, I'm looking at adding one or two more of these beanies to my wardrobe as well. Now only if their other gear was more affordable...
My only complaint is the price. There is definitely some money going directly towards the brand name.
High quality as expected from Arc'teryx. very warm.
