What a mistake and for $229 no less. The fabric is tough, but the straps are horrible. There is essentially no padding in the shoulder straps and none in the hip belt--just one thin layer of webbing. I couldn't believe it!! There is no stiffness or vertical support provided by the hip belt--it just wraps around your waist like a cheap schoolboy back pack. The Bora 62 pack I bought a few years ago has huge, thick, stiff hip supports, which I why I bought it over other. That is where the load is supposed to be carried, not on the shoulders.
The manufacturer or retailer (Backcountry) may argue that for ski mountaineering or climbing you don't need such support or shoulder strap padding. Bullocks! I know the capacity is half of the Bora 62, but nevertheless ski mountaineering loads can be heavy. Other bags for similar purposes at REI had substantial hip support and padding. If they built in these paper-thin, flaccid straps and belt for less weight of more flexibility, why does the darn thing still cost $229?
I wanted a smaller alternative to the big bulky Bora for day trips, so instead I will be using my pack I bought at Big 5 for less than $100. At least it has a decent hip belt.
