The gameplay will evolve as the animal's age over eleven stages that take the player from snowy mountains, across turbulent ice sheets that are ravaged by blizzards, and into the frigid oceans that are patrolled by deadly killer whales. The stages alternate between free-roaming areas containing several mini-games to travel zones, which involve the player taking actions to get from one area to another. The travel zones could be anything from descending a cliff face from the mountains to the ice sheets below or surviving in the open ocean as a storm rages around you.

If you have a child that is really super interested in polar bears and other arctic animals, this might be a good choice. I actually thought the game was kind of repetitive and boring. After a while you can change characters and there are a lot of mini games to master, but the actual game play felt a bit lacking. The game is too cutesy to be for an adult and yet too adult in some places to be for a kid. I don't really recommend it.

You've seen bunches of video games based on movies and cartoon shows every now and then, but then suddenly we have a game based off of.....a nature documentary. This is going to be a FUN one, guys!

Arctic Tale is a video game where you control a polar bear, and eventually you get to control a few other animals as well, but it's mainly about the polar bear. Kinda. I honestly wouldn't even know if this is even supposed to be an actual adventure, because the game's missions are often, if entirely, composed of minigames. It may seem like the game would be a 3D platformer starring a polar bear or something like that, but then suddenly your bear will be a living shuffleboard disc or sliding down an ice slope with half-working controls.

Despite that the back of the box says the Wii's Nunchuck controllers are usable, the game itself encourages you to take it off the Wii Remote. Instead of moving via an analog stick, the game thought it would be better off for you to POINT AND CLICK (whilst holding down a button) to get the polar bear moving! It could probably work in a game solely created to be a story-orientated point 'n click game, but the story here is totally minimal, and the structure is set up like another genre.

The minigames you have to do are just as crappy of course. The most functional minigame in the lot is probably the shuffleboard one, with its ice physics being the only flaw about it relatively to everything else. Certain minigames are outright uncontrollable, and others are simply embarrassing. The most major one is the polar bear fighting, where one bear would duke it out against another by shoving each other on an ice platform. Sounds like fun? Too bad you don't control any of it! It's all automated as you button-mash to quick-time events, and the bears themselves look like they're very lazily struggling to put up any sort of fight whatsoever, so it's often unintentionally hilarious to watch.

All things considered, Arctic Tale is exactly how you may have expected it to turn out on the Wii: Sloppy, unpolished, and unplayable.

Great for a kid who loves animals

If your child loves watching nature shows and researching animals on the computer then this is a great game for them. My 9 year old son LOVES it. But, if your child is only looking for a game for the fun value, this is not the game you want. The graphics are poor and besides exploring and a few mini games, there is not much to do.
