The story was extremely solid, following the path of Paul Anderson in his travels in Europe to the shadowy underground of government testing and beyond. The children acted a bit older, but it seemed that way due to their intelligence and the way they were expected to grow up in their home lives, in my opinion, so it's not out of the ordinary.

The only critique I have is that I was a bit distracted and confused by the book within a book concept at the beginning of the chapters. I understood as I went along why it was being done, but in the beginning, it was hard to follow. And, I didn't understand why the third epilogue existed because it seemed so far in the distant future. Was it to bring it back to circle with the beginning again?

But I loved it otherwise. The first two epilogues made me scream for a sequel, and I was all in.

It's definitely worth the read.

Reading is my life and I've read thousands of books.
It's been a long time that I've read a book that grips you from page 1 and instantly draws you into the story. Where you can connect with the characters so quickly making it almost impossible to put down because the story draws you in, making you need to know what happens next. I was surprised to find out that its his first book. The quality of writing is superb and I would put it in the same category and quality as Arthur C Clark and Asimov

Initially I wasn’t actually that keen to read this as sci-if is not really my usual kind of thing but I decided to give it a go. I have to say I genuinely loved it - Richard Austin is an incredible writer with the ability to paint a picture with words. I went through so many emotions from amusement; pleasure - he got the school setting so right; to terror during some of the out in space parts.
I couldn’t put the book down and read it in one sitting. Once I actually had to - I suffered something that I have heard referred to as ‘book hangover’ where you just want to go back and immerse yourself in the story again.
Please give this book a go - you won’t be disappointed and you will be supporting a new and incredibly talented author. I can’t wait for the next one in the series!

I've just finished reading the Ardenna Crossing and I'm relieved, but in a good way. Richard is a friend of mine and I thought that I'd be obliged to write a good review for the sake of our friendship but happily The Ardenna Crossing is a very accomplished piece of work so I've been saved from that dilemma. The story moves along at a good pace with characters you grow to care about and the odd twist. This in itself would be enough to make it a good book but for me the little passages at the beginning of each chapter show a real maturity in the writing style and makes for a compelling back story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Full transparency- I absolutely wouldn’t have selected this book to read normally, but as it’s been written by someone I know and I wanted to offer support by buying a copy. Now I have finished reading the book I would 100% recommend you read it. The book had me gripped from early doors, due to its fast pace and unexpected turns. The pace continues throughout the book as do the surprises. I have experienced plenty of emotion reading this book and also the urgent desire to get back to it so I can find out what happens next. The end is timely but leaves you wanting more.....can’t wait for the the sequel!
