From the Back Cover

"Tom Rath's books -- which include StrengthsFinder 2.0 and Eat Move Sleep -- have sold 6 million copies and spent 300 weeks on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list. This one is arguably Rath's best. He has written a book that is as readable as it is rigorous and as profound as it is practical."
―DANIEL H. PINK, author of Drive and To Sell Is Human

Are You Fully Charged? is about renewing ourselves in the fullest sense. Drawing on his extensive research, Tom Rath provides us with the three key pillars that can help create a life of more meaning and perspective: being part of something larger than ourselves, valuing people and experiences over mere stuff, and understanding that looking after our own well-being is the first step to doing more for others. An essential book for anyone wanting more out of life.
ARIANNA HUFFINGTON, author of Thrive and co-founder of The Huffington Post

"Tom Rath's brilliant new book, Are You Fully Charged?, builds on his mega best-selling StrengthsFinder series to show you can lead a more meaningful life that results in more energy and better interactions every day. If you follow Rath's wise counsel and adopt his practical advice, your life will be more fulfilling and rewarding. Rath's best book yet."
BILL GEORGE, author of True North and former CEO of Medtronic

"How to live? That is the question -- and Tom Rath has the answer. In his important new book, Are You Fully Charged?, Rath draws on his decades of research -- and his deep humanity -- to point you in the right direction, and to instill your journey with joy and meaning."
SUSAN CAIN, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

"Are You Fully Charged? lays out a blueprint for a better life that creates more energy. Rath's book is easy to read, research-backed, and immediately practical."

Humans need to be re-charged as do the marvelous electronic devices on which many of us now depend. In fact, an abundance of recent and extensive research by Anders Ericsson and his associates at Florida State University (among others) indicates that -- on average -- peak performers require at least eight hours of rest (including sleep) and that is true of athletes as well as of performing artists. With rare exception, they must also commit at least 10,000 hours of highly disciplined practice under strict, expert supervision.

In his latest book, Tom Rath identifies three "keys" that can help almost anyone to re-energize both their attitude and their effort: They believe they are doing something that will benefit others, they are creating many more positive rather than negative moments (for others as well as for themselves), and they are making choices that can help to improve their mental, emotional, and spiritual as well as physical health.

In this context, I am reminded of an incident that occurred long ago after Ralph Waldo Emerson explained transcendentalism to those who filled a church in Concord, Massachusetts. He had agreed to answer a few questions. An elderly farmer, hat in hand, stood up. "Mr. Emerson, I have a question." Emerson smiled. "Sir, how do you transcend an empty stomach?"

I agree with Rath that, with all due respect to the importance of rigorous and sufficient practice and of rising above trivial and temporary irritations, we must also replenish our sources of energy in terms of rest, as mentioned, but also nutrition and physical exercise. Most important of all, we must develop the right mindset.

I have read most of Tom’s books. So far, my favorite has been Eat Move Sleep. (btw, my kids love The Rechargeables, an illustrated version for kids)
Are You Fully Charged? is a very good read and while it covers some of Eat Move Sleep ideas (particularly in the “energy” section), it feels like a more “complete” book. Basically, the idea is that while it’s important to make right choices about moving, eating and sleeping, that is really not enough. To experience what Tom calls, “full charge”, you have to also create meaning on everyday basis (he defines “meaning” as doing something of the benefit to other people). And, you need to focus on improving your everyday ratio of positive to negative interactions. Like his other books, this integrates a lot of research (over 200 references). I am also looking forward to seeing the film that will be related to the book. I saw the trailer on Tom’s website and it looks pretty interesting.
I am recommending the book wholeheartedly. I am knocking half a star away for the length – the book could be a little longer.

I love Tom's books because they are so actionable. While the book is a structured to be a great read from front to back, I took a different approach. I read through the first chapter (5 pages), and then went to the back of the book where there are recaps and discussion questions for each chapter. I flagged a few that looked interesting, and then went to read those specific chapters for context on how to make these changes in my life. Inevitably, I'd read adjacent chapters, because they flow so well into each other.

After doing this, I realized that this book is a great way to do an audit on your life, a reminder to examine if you are maximizing it to the fullest. After all, we are on this earth for only a short time. Why not make the best and most of what time we have?

Here are my three favorite chapters, and the daily experiences that I changed as a result of the book.

- Chapter 7: Initiate to Shape the Future. Recap: Instead of responding to every ringing bell, focus on less to do more. The key question: "If you could focus only on a few meaningful things tomorrow, what would they be?"
Like many people, I've fallen for the fallacy known as "Inbox Zero". While I know it's unattainable, I try to read every email and respond to just those that I really need to. But I still don't get the most important things done. I realized that my problem wasn't just reducing distractions, it was creating moments of focusing on meaningful things. I now write down at the start of each day the ONE thing that I look back on and draw satisfaction in doing. Guaranteed way to beat back procrastination as well.

- Chapter 10: Be 80 Percent Positive: Recap: Focus most of your time and attention on what *is* working.

Read it and you will quickly determine this is a book to pass on to others. As a physician I have found it right on and relevant for every person. We all want to have a meaningful life and we want our loved ones to experience that too. The ideas included in Fully Charged are essentially a "how to" on building a framework for a life worth living. All of the research can be explored in more detail on tomrath.org. Great Great Book. A must read for the young professional but it will resonate with every person. With this book as well as with his book Eat Move Sleep, Tom Rath has made the best science accessible and understandable for the common man. The bottom line is it will make you a better version of you and one that will prompt others to ask you why you are smiling with such a spring in your step.
