As I said earlier, the action is very well written. It is easy to follow and is definitely the highlight of the novel.
Unfortunately, the ending is also rushed. While the final action is good; the wrap-up and conclusion feels very rushed.
I'll knock a star off because the ending was a bit anti-climactic, and having been in the military, I noticed some of the military facts were off. (F-16s weren't flying in 1970 and don't fly off of aircraft carriers, using the term "Air Police" even though the Air Force stopped using it 20 years before the year the story was set, etc)
To sum the book up, I would have to say it is a collage of -many- alien-inspired conspiracy theories jumbled up into a story which ties them in very well. If you're into UFO fiction, then this should be a must-read. The ability of the author to make this story actually work and work well is amazing to me.
I had no idea the author had written a series after this book was written, as my original paperback was printed before there was a second book. As the author writes most of his works in pen names, I was unable to track down any other books by him at the time, and thought it was just a one-hit wonder. When purchasing the book for Kindle, I saw that there were in fact several books written in the series afterward. Needless to say, I purchased the second book in the series immediately!
Bob Mayer does an excellent job twisting together a lot of seemingly random threads into a compelling story. I had some trouble with the various characters at times, but I generally favor slightly darker main characters than most people. And really the ending gave me this feeling that the book could have benefited from another 100 pages or so, but it might encroach upon being two books long and so Mayer just 'wrapped it up' in about 10 pages with a lot of oddly simplistic and convenient events. The ending sits in contrast to the well pulsed, slow, and mysterious build of the rest of the book. I am curious if I would feel the same way if I had the second book to dive into right away, but either way, Area 51 is a good read and I will definitely read the other books in the series.
