Minus the war and sports section, great book!
After having children, I started asking, “How should the Church redeem sports and sports culture such that the weak are not discouraged, humiliated, and treated as sub-humans?” I was asking the wrong question. The world will always attempt to discourage, humiliate, and mistreat the weak. The world also seeks to enfeeble the strong. In addition, the world hates all who seek to follow Jesus Christ. Since we face such an adversary, the question should be, “How should we redeem sports such that participants can endure mistreatment and accept failure with Christ-centered contentedness, commitment, and courage?”
Prince’s In the Arena answers how Christian spectators, participants, parents, and coaches can serve as cultural redeemers, using sports as a training ground to disciple athletes, preparing them to be courageous not just in sports, but throughout life. If you are a coach or parent, I highly recommend reading In the Arena. If you are a sports-hater, like I used to be, then I plead with you to take up and read in the Arena.
