This is actually a really good story. And it's not like I couldn't see what Grossart was trying for. It's just something that can be very difficult. But the execution of the storytelling often gets in the way of the story itself.

This is readable -- if you're very patient. But Nilesh Nimkar is right: it should have been a short story or (maybe...) a novella.

In current form, it's far too much stew from one simple little oyster. The story drags on & on before the reader gets any definite clue about what's going on.There's too much repetition of unexplained events before the plot is revealed.

Deceit is a very accurate title for this book. Because this book is very deceitful. It pulls you in with a very engrossing premise. Four different points in the life of our protagonist, Brody, when he either suffered horrible tragedy or narrowly avoided suffering tragedy. However slowly we find out that things for Brody are not what they seem and he is living these four days over and over again a.l.a Ground Hog day with minor differences here and there. Add to that a strange occurrences like time freezing, getting chased by black shadow, people turning into zombies and a girl appearing and disappearing and this book had the makings of a very good mystery thriller.
Unfortunately the story has been very poorly executed. Essentially the first 80% of the book is simply rehash of 4 basic scenarios that Brody finds himself in which do not progress the story one bit leaving the reader confused and frustrated. If you make it that far then congrats, the ending, IMO, you will find very underwhelming and undeserved. It is as if the writer had an idea for a short story or a novella and decided to pad it into a full length novel. As a matter of fact you can read the first 20% of the book and the safely skip to the last 20% and not miss a thing.
There are other problems with the book like when Brody finally catches up with Connie(the girl) and demands and explanation of what's going on. And instead of giving a very confused Brody a straight answer Connie, who herself is scared and on the run, decides to play the pronoun game.
(This is not verbatim but a gist)
Brody: "What's going on ?"
Connie: "Do you dream, Brody? You have seen 'It". Haven't you ? "
When you are running for your life and sanity is at stake, such stilted dialogue does not sound natural between two people.

I actually enjoyed this book until about 30% mark then it started getting repetitive, then boring and then frustrating. Then I realized I could just skip to the end to find out how it was going to end without missing anything and I was right.
