Product Description
Perfect for our string and woodwind cases! By maintaining appropriate levels of humidity in your instrument case, you can prevent loss of tonality, structural damage (such as warping, seam separation and cracking to your instrument), and prevent bow hair from shrinking.
The Arion design is unique and has none of the shortcomings of traditional humidifiers. It relies on a proprietary special solution combined with hydrogels enclosed in a space-age plastic that allows moisture to consistently escape through its walls. The Arion Humidifier will not leak in your case, requires only plain tap water every 1-3 months and will last for many years.

Keep in mind that the best equipment of any sort is going to perform poorly if not used correctly.
I use them for all my steel (6 and 12) string acoustic and my nylon string classical guitars.
This humidifier is meant to be in the case (with the guitar also in the case), not inside the guitar.
Placing it up by the head is not ideal, as the wood that needs the humidity is the body of the guitar.
If you move the case around a lot, you may want to put the unit inside a soft cloth pouch, to keep it from rubbing the guitar.
Putting it inside the accessory compartment will work, but is also not ideal.
I keep mine snugged in the gap between the guitar body next to the heel of of the neck, and the compartment section.
It will not humidify your guitar outside of a case; it is not a room humidifier.
This even works adequately in soft-sided gig bags... as long as it is with the guitar in a small enclosed space it should work well.
It works for well over a month between refills, and keeps the case in the 40%-45% humidity range, which is ideal (and I'm in dry Colorado, too).
The time between refills depends on how tight your case is - in my experience, it's good for several months inside a hardshell plastic case with good edge seals; with a nylon/foam gig bag it's good for about a month.
The more sealed the case, the more consistent the case humidity (less variable with the weather).
It has a clearly visible water fill line - fill it up to that line, and no further, with *distilled* (important!) water, and you will have no troubles with water leaks, excessive dampness, or with the product's longevity.
Even when the hydro-gel crystals are shrunk/dehydrated to about 1/3 of the "full" volume, it is keeping the humidity up in the 40% range.
That's about when I refill it.
Let the freshly refilled container sit upright for about 5-10 minutes to allow the crystals to absorb all the free water before putting back in the case.
On first use, your case is probably very dry, and it will take some hours for the case to reach equilibrium, but once that happens this humidifier keeps the case in a steady, reliable humidity level.
-------------
After more than six months of using the Arion humidifier I'm ready for something else. I downgraded my rating to two stars because it seems every time I refill the Arions, it takes a week or two for them to start working again. Again, once they start working they work well, but it's that week or two after a refill that I'm concerned about. They won't even raise the humidity in a sealed zip-lock bag during that two week period.
-------------
I moved on to the OASIS OH-14 (blue) humidifier and am really satisfied. One humidifier in each of my guitar cases maintains the humidity between 42 and 48%. Works much better than the Arion.

It seems like the cap fits loosely, allowing a small amount of moisture to evaporate and sneak its way out of the body of the humidifier, thus providing a very slow release of moisture into the air. As a result, I would say it's not really suitable for humidifying a case that's far off from the ideal humidity, but it's enough to maintain humidity in a case that's already at the right relative humidity. Only one of these may also not be enough to humidify a large case (e.g. bass, cello, guitar).
That said, I've mostly kept it out of the case so far since it's summer here, and humid enough as it is. We've had maybe a week or two of drier air during which I tried it out.
I live in Canada, in the mountains where humidity is often 20-35% so getting a consistent level higher than this is important. This product seems to raise a guitar case humidity by 10-15%, so just about as much as I’d like. The Amazon description doesn’t say, but the instructions with the product tell you that multiple may be required to raise it to a normal level. At first it didn't raise it enough, but after a few days I think my hard bag became saturated enough that the humidity inside became a steady 45-50%.
Honestly it seems a little cheaply made, the seams are crooked and lid doesn’t latch in any way. Also the bottom end looks weak so I worry about it breaking over time. Also would be nice to have a way to affix it to my case, instead I have to find some way to mount it while still maximizing exposed surface area. Some major oversights and not having the option for a large one over several small ones is a pain enough to give only 4 stars, however clever the gels are. It does do the job and minimise the hassle of refilling however, I just need to find a way of affixing it in a way I trust having my hardbag knocked around and it not dumping weird gel all over my baby. For now I'll be keeping it separate from my guitar in transport, just to be safe.
UPDATE:
After a few months of use, I noticed humidity was dropping despite frequently trying to top up with water. The gel just keeps expanding; I've removed half of what came in there and still barely any room for water, not to mention the water isn't working to the bottom without lot's of help. It says tap water is fine but I suspect it isn't. Tap water has lots of impurities and minerals, that when the water evaporates, they line the case and the plastic can not longer breathe. I believe this is what's happened and now the product is useless. It may be fine with distilled water so just head to the store and grab a gallon for a few bucks. Not impressed at all for just a few months of use, moved to the Oasis brand as their instructions seem very comprehensive and the gel starts as crystals that you can see need topping up.
Most important, they work. Worth every penny.
