This one starts with Staff Sgt. Kate Dunajski arriving at her new posting. Camp Lemonnier, Djibuti. Al Shabaab is in the area the teams are split and all over the area trying to pin them down. The teams are here to mentor and support the SNA, Somalian National Army. Its one daunting task as Al Shabaab never quitts.
Kates team ODA 555, called the triple nickels, is legendary. Like all the teams on the ground they have two of every tactical position. Two medical, two weapons sargeants, two of everyone. Right now her team is split with one half at the command center and the other half in the boonies with an SNA patrol.
Al Shabaab, an afiliate of AQ,, is run by a man named Godane. His right hand is Al Sif and they occupy a fortress in the mountains. Godane has around four hundred followers in this fortress and there are underground tunnels throughout the complex.
Godane also has the first walker chained in a dungeon. Gobane believes as long as this walker lives he will rule. Of course Godane is bats**t crazy but his followers are loyal to him.
The walkers are a product of illness. An illness that turns them into cannibals who will attack any living person. Once killed those attacked become walkers as well. This swells the numbers of walkers and they overrun everything and everyone including Lemonnier and every town and villiage in the area. Head shots are the only way to drop them and it takes those fighting them a while to figure this out.
Zack and Baxter are still alive and in the stronghold. The only reason they are alive is because of the Predator Drone they have. It was the price they paid to stay alive. Baxter can operate the drone and the drone is something Godane is more than glad to have. Read Arisen Genesis to get the story on Zack and Baxter.
Master Sergeant Jake Redding is one of the team seargeant for Kate's team. He's been is SF for seventeen years and is damned near indestructable.
Captain Brendan Jefferson Davis is the team captain. This is his first SF job but before that he had two deployments as platoon leader with the 82nd airborn. He's no pushover or pussy and plays an intregal part of the story.
Todd is an engineer. A guy who can build or fix anything. His magic is also an ingtregal part of this very good well written kick ass story.
The camp is overrun and everyone is fighting for their lives.
So begins another great read by Fuchs. His D-Boys rock.
This one has Jake, Kate, Todd, Zach, Baxter, Elijah, Davis, Price, the weapons seargeant and sniper Kwon, the rest of the team, Godane, Al Sif, an overrun Lemonnier, walkers, the Predator drone, a Davis who recognizes Zach, a plan by Zach and a Baxter who makes it happen, betrayal, revenge, the walking dead, the stronghold, an attack on the stronghold, death, destruction, a nuclear carrier in the Gulf of Aden and Jake Redding and Kate and survivors hanging on for the next part of this kick ass story.
Five Stars and then some. Super read.
***There may be very mild spoilers ahead***
The timeline on this one stretches from the fall of Camp Lemonnier (first highlighted in Genesis) and we see some references back to that. It comes full circle all the way to present day, past where we left the Alpha team and the carrier in Book 8, Empire of the Dead.
The story revolves around a detachment of Special Forces from the Camp who break out and get out into the boonies. A new hand is being introduced to the team during the chaos which makes that persons life quite...interesting. :P Many, many months later they are still surviving but with no real focus or mission. We also come back to CIA analysts Zack and Baxter from the earlier prequel, whose situation has deteriorated and are now firmly in the grasp of an egotistical, genocidal madman and his extremely skilled and ruthless second in command. Last but not least, the ravening hordes are massing on the continent and of COURSE the storm is headed their way, full of Zulu's, Romeo's, and Flying Nightmare's.
(Maybe not quite flying, but close enough, and I'm sure the truly appropriate word would not pass muster here.)
Naturally, all three of these groups collide. The new characters are brought in and fleshed out. You KNOW some of them have to go down, and while there were a couple that were either: a) well deserved, you traitor bastard; b) steadily leaning that way and going out in such heroic fashion that you could accept it; there was at least one death that left me just stunned at the end.
We are starting to see the broad outlines of a finish shaping up, and while things still won't be quite as easy as we would like, there is a glimmer of hope.
