This is our 2nd Ariston heater - the first is a 4 gallon under the kitchen sink. We got this one to sit in our basement bathroom and feed it, the main floor bathroom sink and a future 1/2 bath on the 2nd floor. It just makes so much sense to keep a small amount of hot water ready to use right near the fixture. That way you don't have to waste a bunch of water if you need hot water. These seem very well insulated, so I think that the standby losses are negligible. Our main heater is a gas tankless, and these really help improve the performance for intermittent uses such as washing hands or dishes. I just put this inline with the tankless, so that it can "smooth" out our hot water. The tankless works best for steady uses, such as showers and filling a dishwasher. Adding one of these Aristons gives you the best of all worlds.

I used this for a replacement water heater in my travel trailer. It did not fit in the original space, so I installed it in the closet space and connected it with the original plumbing with plastic hose. You have to be plugged in to use it, but other than that it works great and at a cost of about 2/5th of what an RV water heater would cost.

UPDATE: 4 years and still going strong with the unit I installed in my travel trailer. I've spent about 2 of the last 4 years living in the trailer on job sites, so it has had a reasonable workout.

About a year later I purchased a second one of these. I used it to feed a temporary shower in my basement while I was doing a bathroom remodel. Worked well for that use, too. That unit is now installed under the kitchen sink. It saved a long run from the house water heater to the kitchen, which saves quite a bit in this cold climate, and I don't have to wait for the hot water to reach the kitchen. In addition, the switch on the front of it allows me to switch it off when I'm going to be away from home and save even more.

Recovery on these water heaters is about an hour.

Needless to say, I'm very pleased with the performance and service and I'm about to order a third unit to run the washing machine.

UPDATE JUNE 17, 2010 - BOTH CONTINUE TO WORK GREAT. EXCEEDED MY OWN EXPECTATION.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've purchased 2 of these for two different purposes. Both are GREAT! Easy to install (I am boarder-line incompetent when it comes to plumbing and even I was able to do this with only a couple trips to the local hardware store).

The quality does not seem all the great ... but for the price and so far (one I've had and used for almost 2 months, the other almost a month) they work fine and there are no problems.

FACTUALLY: It does seem to take a good half hour or more to heat up and re-heat once the hot water is used. It would not in any way be useful as a tank-less water heater since only lukewarm water at best comes out as the tank reheats. Also, I live in Southern California and it is the middle of summer. I don't know how long it will take and it's performance either during the winter when tap water is usually colder or what would happen in colder climates with near freezing water coming into the tank.

NOTE: CHECK THE DIMENSIONS CAREFULLY. THE SIX (6) GALLON SIZE IS PRETTY BIG AND ALTHOUGH I DID NOT WANT TO ACTUALLY PLACE UNDER A SINK/VANITY, I DON'T THINK IT WOULD FIT UNDER ANY OF MY AVERAGE/ORDINARY SINKS OR VANITIES.

USES:
1. In an extra bathroom with no hot water, it provides enough for a quick but good shower.
2. For a pet bathtub with no access to hot water, it make a GREAT warm bath for my now VERY HAPPY DOG!

I have 2 tankless water heaters in my house (one on each end of the house). I added a 6 gallon tank to one of them to see if it would allow me to get hot water faster while the tankless water heater starts to heat up. I purchased an A.O.Smith for this and it worked great. For 4 years it has plugged away and I've never thought about it for a second. I've never had to touch it even one time so it's covered in dust and spider webs. I love it.

Two years later, I asked the plumber to put the exact same water tank into my house on the other tankless water heater. Instead, he installed this one by Ariston (Bosch). After I saw what he did, I told him this wasn't the same brand, but he assured me that this was far better. It was *NOT* better.

From the very beginning, the thermostat circuit kept triggering and shutting off because it said the water was too hot. Even when I turned it down to a very low temperature, it kept triggering. I would have to run down the basement and reset the tank. After many months of this and calls to the plumber, he told me to call their customer service line. Ariston (owned by Bosch) sent me a new thermostat and told me to install it. I installed it with some difficulty because the instructions on how to do this were terribile.

It fixed the problem for about 6 months, then it started triggering again. At first occasionally. Now it triggers every day. I get lots of exercise running the stairs. I assure you that I'm monkeying with this thing so much that it doesn't have any dust or spider webs on it. It's squeaky clean.

I called tech support and asked for a new thermostat again. They told me that my warranty expired and I was on my own. The guy on the phone, Scott, was rude and condescending.
