This book reveals the wealth of knowledge Tim Ernst has accumulated over his years in the Ozarks. It is descriptive enough to keep you on your toes for upcoming views and special areas, but not overladen with detail. There are maps, but they contain no topographical info.

If you plan to hike in in Arkansas, then this is the guide book for you. My wife and I have hiked many of the trails in the state and use this book to help us make our selections and get the most out of our (very few) free weekends. What I like about the book is the checklist on the back with listing of each trail and its length. Inside, each trail is shown on a map and a detailed description of what to expect, including how to get there (often a difficult task!). And by detailed, I mean DETAILED... such as specific things to look for, step-by-step turn directions, etc. We carry this book with us when we go hiking just to be safe. There are 78 trails listed in the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is hiking in the Arkansas. Be sure to check out Tim Ernst's other book on the Buffalo River area for detailed information on the trails in that area.

I just got this book and I am really disappointed. The write up says Tim Ernst is a wilderness photographer. The only photo is the front cover. The second problem is the organization. The back cover lists the trails alphabetically, there's an agency list, and a small half page map of Arkansas in the back that shows generally where the trail is located. The first trail is listed on page 24, Trail #43, the last trail is listed on page 184 Trail #75. With all trails listed in between. There are no references no way to compare trails in an area. The trail descriptions seem fine but I'll need another map to find locations. Probably easier to find a different book.

Great book, very detailed trail descriptions and highlights. I've heard some say its disorganized, but I think it is very manageable and user friendly. If you are contemplating hiking in Arkansas, this book will help you plan your trip

This book is a wonderful tool. It is very clear about what to expect on each trail. It is accurately descriptive. My copy is worn, but wherever we go hiking-so it goes as well.

This book is a great guide, but would be even better if it had a little more organization. It appears the trails are grouped together by region, but they aren't labeled. It would be great to have it divided into chapters for each region of the state. Chapters and nice table of contents and coordinating map would make this book dynamite.

If you are just starting out hiking in Arkansas this is a great place to start. You can tell the guy that wrote the book took the time to walk every mile of every trail. The maps are helpful enough but not allways to scale.
