These keep my Arlo Pro 2 cameras powered up all the time, enabling some special features that make a great Arlo Pro 2 system even better.
Cable is too short to be convenient
Cable is not in an easily-concealable configuration - it's a large diameter round wire as opposed to a flat cable
Only available in black - a mismatch to the case color of the Arlo cameras and an eyesore in comparison
This is your only choice right now to keep the cameras powered up outside and utilize advanced features
I love my Arlo Pro 2 system but I'm seriously annoyed with these adapters. Several third parties offer outdoor power cables for the Arlo Pro 2 cameras. These competitive options offer cables in both white and black colors, they offer flat cables for easy routing/concealment and they offer lengths of 16 feet or more. NetGear has elected to essentially block the use of these third party adapters through software on the cameras. Netgear's offering, by comparison, is only offered in black, which does not match the camera and is highly contrasting when routed along white trim of the house. Netgear's offering features a round, heavy gauge cable that is inconvenient to route and conceal and is only available in a relatively short 8.2 feet.
In order to preserve my warranty and comply with the instructions for use, I purchased 6 of these NetGear outdoor power adapters for my Arlo Pro 2 cameras. With the cameras mounted 7 feet above the ground, per the instructions, these 8 ft-long cables offer very little flexibility in camera location relative to power outlets. The cables are hard to conceal and the cost of the adapter is not commensurate with the features, compared to third-party options.
I have been really satisfied with my Arlo Pro 2 setup but these cables are a let-down! Unfortunately, they are your only option for outdoor constant power supply.
After following the troubleshooting guide on the Arlo website (unplugging and plugging the cord back in from both the solar panel and the camera), it worked fine for about another week, as long as the outside temperature was above freezing and it was not cloudy.
Now the camera no longer charges from the solar panel, even in bright sun and with the outside temperature above 45f. I brought the camera in and it will charge from the wall plug adapter. It appears that the solar panel has failed.
I'm tired of being NETGEAR's high-paying beta tester for their junk.
Alternative solution did not work. Would not recommend this with the ARLO GO system.
After using a direct power source, its the only way the unit will work. We use these at our ranch and gun range, ARLO support is not recommended, we spent another 4 hours today trying to get a replacement; calling amex instead. Pass on this and ARLO GO.
07/21/18: It's now direct sunlight again the next day and has been for awhile at 72 deg outside at 1:30 pm in July...so a lot of sun time. It says it's charging but the battery has dropped to 15%. What? I'm saving the box for a likely return. I will try swapping in another battery and see what happens. I installed a different Arlo brand battery charged to %100 percent.
07/23/18: The battery initially held charge with minimal loss and then began dropping. The percentage in the new battery from July 21 with very minimal motion activation on the camera while the solar panel has been attached has dropped to 78% by end of day. At this rate the battery will drop to zero in about ten or eleven days. Please note that water/rain is not in the picture so water is not a factor and the results are not promising. The Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 camera in contrast have been great. I've personally recommended them to others.
07/24/18: Battery life at the end of today is now at 58%. I will now unplug the solar panel to compare battery life loss.
I returned the unit to Amazon.
07/27/18 I charged the same battery to 100% and installed it in the same camera without the solar charger.
08/07/18 Camera still shows 100% battery level.
Top reviews from other countries
On the other hand, the second unit I bought I have just installed on another (more accessible) camera and it's charging nicely (remembering to seal with petroleum jelly again). So it seems that these (expensive) solar panels have a lifetime of <1 year; I converted my other camera to hard-wired during the autumn, about 6 months ago.
Not great for a penny change out of £90.
SECOND UPDATE: Upgraded up to 3 stars again now. You can see (below) why I downgraded, but the replacement is working fine. I have to say though, I believe this is purely because I used petroleum jelly to seal the cable connections against water, at both the camera and the panel ends. NOTE: it's applied only to the sleeving, NOT the metal electrical connections!
So this one has been great, the camera hasn't needed to be charged again - the solar panel has kept this one well charged.
If I hadn't had to seal the cables then it would be a 4 or 5 star review; it shouldn't need to be like this. Netgear should either advise (and ideally supply) sealant, or design the connections to be entirely waterproof.
UPDATE: Now downgraded to 1 star. Why? Because I bought 2 at the same time. The second went up the day after the original one, and this morning I am getting the same "charging fault" error with the panel.
Again, this will get returned for a replacement. But it seems that these outdoor solar panels cannot cope with being outdoors. Arlo's forums show users recommending a variety of ways to seal the joints where the cable meets the camera and the panel but you should NOT need to do this - or at the very least, Netgear should not only advise this but also include some sealant in the packaging.
This really isn't good enough. I hopefully am not going to update this review for a couple of months; if the replacements last that long I'll upgrade the score. If not, you'll get an update before then!
When it works, it works. As with everyone else, I bought 2 of these to keep my outdoor cameras charged so I wouldn't have to get up a ladder all the time to recharge them (and by the way, they do NOT last as long as Netgear say they do).
I am returning the faulty one, we'll see how we get on - but I am very disappointed; the ability to mount and charge wirelessly is THE reason I bought the whole package. If I have the same problem again I'll probably be bundling the whole ~£1,100 of kit and returning it ALL for a refund as it's just not fit for the purpose it was sold for.
Despite this fault being well-known (google "arlo solar charging fault"), ARLO want you to jump through lots of hoops to initiate a replacement. Their own firmware has no tolerance for a charging range seemingly to prevent third party cable providers.
I have asked by CC provider to initiate a chargeback. Would NEVER BY ARLO again. Will stick with a more reliable wired system in future. Was OK for a short term fix but won't be getting any more of my money!!!!!!!!
DO NOT IGNORE THE REVIEW (like I foolishly did)
