Arlo Needs Glasses Hardcover – May 22, 2012
In this inventive, interactive (and now revised) picture book created by Barney Saltzberg, the bespectacled author of Beautiful Oops!, who charms young readers and their parents with a perfect light touch and joyful spirit, kids get to do just what Arlo does to solve his problem. They read an eye chart, look through a lift-the-flap phoropter (that big machine optometrists use), and try on different pairs of glasses—movie star glasses! superhero glasses! mad scientist glasses! And they interact with Arlo as he rediscovers how to be the best ball-catcher in the neighborhood and picks up a new favorite pastime along the way—reading! One out of five school-age children needs glasses. Arlo will show them just how lucky they are.

The phoropter page is my daughter's favorite page...in fact, her optometrist was stunned when a 4-year-old matter-of-factly declared that she wanted to look into her phoropter.
What I like most about this book is how it focuses on the positives on wearing glasses...something you really need to do when you have a very young child that needs to wear glasses. While I see the place for books that bring up the negative aspects (kids making fun of you), I didn't want that message to be sent to my daughter at the stage. She wears her glasses without any resistance whatsoever, and genuinely loves the way they look. Nobody makes fun of her at pre-school...it just never comes up.
I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who has a young child that needs to wear specs. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
Edit: I originally rated this 5 stars, but knocked it down to 3 after I received the new version of the book. My son was so disappointed that the book was changed from the original. There is no longer a pull-out phoropter, just a flap to lift. The last page no longer has a pop-up of Arlo's favorite books, just a flat illustration. I'm planning to return it.

We are almost a year later and still read it and play with the glasses. She loved knowing what the tool was when she went back for her check up!

Arlo, (A slightly humanised pet dog) is no longer enjoying games and stories because he can't see very well, he visits the optician, here the reader is introduced to the process of a sight test and helpfully named equipment.
Next, Arlo gets to try out several pairs of themed glasses eg 'Rock Star' glasses! You get to pull these glasses out of their pockets and try them on a pop up Arlo - or yourself! He finally finds the perfect pair, and the story ends with Arlo enjoying all his favourite things again!
Really funny illustrations, my son loves the book, it's a great message - glasses are brilliant, cool and are good for you!
This is the best book for children who are new to (or already wear) glasses, have bought others that don't come over positively.

A ball on a ribbon you can throw to Arlo (velcro attachment).
Many glasses to try on yourself or a prop up image of Arlo. (stored in little pockets)
A pull out section to change the image of the eye chart from sharp to blurry.
My 2.5 year old loves it but we always make sure she is supervised with it.
I recommend to everyone who's 1-4 year old are getting their first glasses.

It really helped and she talked about Arlo at the beginning when adapting to her glasses.
Nice images and the glasses are a great idea for kids to interact with the book.
