Update: After submitting this review on Amazon yesterday, I forwarded it to various emails at Netgear (Arlo is made by Netgear). I received three phone calls and two emails attempting to help me with my situation. Two new complete add-on camera kits were shipped to me as RMAs along with a postage paid return label. All this arrived her within 24 hour of this original post. Customer service really stepped up once I was able to get beyond the first level of support.
The BATTERY CHARGE RESOLUTION... The source of the charging problem was the Arlo power adapter (white rectangular box)... both the one that came with the original cameras and the replacement power adapter were bad. The original cables, camera and battery are all fine. The new power adapter that came with the RMA add-on camera charge the new cameras as well as my original cameras. I mentioned below that others suggested using a standard micro USB cable in place of the Arlo charging cable. I was told by a senior level Netgear support person that using a standard micro USB rather than the cable provided would not resolve any issue and in fact will not work. I believe this to be the case.
I am leaving this reviewed as a one star in hopes that it may draw attention to my experience and help others. Having said that, I do really like the functionality of the cameras and software and I like the value of having no cloud storage fee. Now that Netgear stepped up and my issues are resolved, I would recommend this product with the caveat that customer service is lacking. I would give this product 4 stars.
I loved this camera system for the first few months... until the batteries needed to be charged. I am now more than a month into this and a dozen calls into Netgear's Philipine's-based call center and still no resolution. After basic trouble shooting, I was told they would send a new USB charging cable and power supply. A week later, the cable came... still no charge to battery. After another call and another week, the power supply finally arrived... still no charge to battery. After another call, I was told that the cameras would be swapped out... a week later and no cameras, no email indicating that the cameras would be shipped. Several days later ANOTHER cable arrived (not sure why). Another call and I was told that no camera replacements were authorized and that I needed to further troubleshoot. We then upgraded the firmware... still no charge to battery. I was then told that one last step was to replace the batteries (two cameras = two batteries). A week later, ONE new battery arrived... new battery won't charge with new firmware, new cable and new power supply. At this point, it doesn't take a genius to determine that the issue is the camera hardware. Don't get me wrong, the steps seem logical but this should not take a month and a dozen calls. Yet another call to Netgear support and I was told that we needed to upgrade the firmware of the second camera before customer support could authorize and escalation of the case... so that it could be FURTHER reviewed by a more senior level support group to determine IF new camera's could be authorized. I was told I could not personally speak to anyone with the authority to order a replacement. I now have a month of frustration into this and the best I can hope for are RMA cameras and the cost to ship back all the stuff they sent me along with the faulty cameras. Hope you don't need support. I see that others had similar charging issues and were able to resolve by using a standard USB cable. That did not resolve my issue.
I have the base station sensitivity set to 100% and the camera set to 95%. Below is when I'll get an alert. YES = Motion detected and I got an alert. NO = No motion detected and no alert.
- Someone walks on the walkway and approaches the front door. YES
- Someone walks on the sidewalk on the far right, from either direction, day or night. YES
- Any activities happen on the lawn on the right. YES
- A bug flys by the camera. YES
- I back the car (a white minivan) out of the garage. (Grey car is facing the garage). NO
- I walk to the grey car from garage, get in, and drive away. NO
- I pull the car up from the street to the driveway, get out, and walk to the garage. NO
- I should say, ANY ACTIVITIES happen on the asphalt driveway. NO
- Cars drive by on street. NO
- Garbage truck picks up my garbage by the curb. NO
- Mail carrier deliver mail into curbside mailbox. NO
I know the ideal distance is less than 20ft. The camera is about 18ft from the grey car and from the sidewalk. Not sure why it wouldn't pick up anyone or anything in the driveway but would pick up anything on the side walk. I deemed this useless if it can't even capture anything on the driveway which is not that far away and nothing is obstructing its view.
Night vision is limited to objects near the camera. It can't see anything far away. If someone is really trying to break into our cars at night, the camera won't do anything. This is a very pricey camera and I expected much more. I'm returning it.
Update 10/29 :
I didn’t return it but moved it above the garage door. With the sensitivity set to 100%, it wouldn’t be even detect when my car backs out of the garage or pull in to the garage. It’s literally 4 ft from my car and it does not detect it. I deemed this camera useless.

The setup for the cameras is really simple. Put in the batteries, plug in the base, get the app and sync the cameras. I was recording in 10 minutes out of the box.
The picture quality is good, I could make out license plates on cars in front of the house, about 50 ft away. The night vision was clear as well, you can make out faces clearly. You can also increase (or decrease) the quality at the sacrifice of battery life. I didn't see a need as the middle setting was clear enough for me.
The app is really simple to use. You can tell thought and work went in to making it. You can save and create custom settings for each camera or multiple cameras. There's a scheduling option to have different settings for the cameras in different days/times thats fully customizable. Theres GPS options to change modes when you leave the house with your phone. Motion sensitivity and audio sensitivity are all adjustable for each individual mode and camera. There isn't anything I wanted to adjust/test or have the cameras do that wasn't in the app. It's great.
The motion and sound capture works great. The motion has a range of about 25 ft. It doesn't work through a window, because no motion detector will. But it picks up any and all movement in its field of view. I got lots of videos of small birds and animals that I was suprised it could pick up.
The camera records 10 second clips BY DEFAULT, but you can adjust the record time from 1 second to 120 seconds after detecting sound/motion or until the sound/motion stops up to 300 seconds.
The not so good:
The range of the base to the camera is limited. About 40 ft. I put one in the basement and one outside, both happened to be in that range and work fine, but if you have a really big house, this might be an issue.
The supplied mounting bracket is a strong magnet. It won't fall off when bumped or rattled, the magnet is quite strong. But someone could remove the camera if they wanted to quite quickly and easily. I bought a different bracket that threads into the camera for$25 for the outdoor camera. It can still be removed, but would require both hands and some time, so I fugure you'd at least get some video of the theif.
The system is not 5G compatible. That means if you have a 5G router and internet( which I have), you can't plug the system in to THAT router. However, you can plug a normal router (mines an airport router) in to the 5G router and then plug the camera base station into the normal router and it will work fine.
Overall it's a great camera system, not cheap to buy, but also not cheaply made. You get what you pay for. I'm very happy with it and would recommend.
I've had 3 IP cameras of a competing brand for more than 3 years: All I can say about them is that their software was crap and that their motion detection capabilities were buggy and pretty much useless.
I'm so glad to have made the switch to Arlo!
Since I first had some doubts and fears of going with a new brand I started by purchasing the single Arlo Pro camera and base station combo. To my surprise I can say that this system works 100 times better compared to my previous experience with IP cameras. Both the free App and website are intuitive, pretty solid, and provide just the right level of customization capabilities and features. Everything in the App and website are well thought out, well laid out, and straight forward to use.
I've since purchased 3 more Arlo Pro cameras and all 4 work flawlessly: What a joy they are to install without having to run power or ethernet cables through walls or ceilings! I've had no camera disconnections from the base station which is located in my basement while the 4 cameras are located inside and outside my house, with wifi signals going through floors and brick walls in many cases. If I power cycle the base station all 4 cameras reconnect without manual intervention. The cameras' rechargeable battery life appears to be extremely good: my 1 week old camera is still showing 96% charge even though all my cameras are setup to record "Best Video".
I've purchased a 128GB Lexar Jump Drive (LJDS45-128ABNL) to plug in the back of my Arlo base station so I could keep many months' worth of my Arlo Pro cameras' 720p videos (in addition to the 1 week of free on-line storage you get from Arlo which is great).
-high quality video
-very easy to install
-batteries last long, good night vision
-setting to record as long as motion is detected does not work
-setting to record for a specific amount of time when motion is detected sometimes stops recording early (I set mine to two minutes but it often stopped at random times between 1-2 minutes)
-sometimes just does not pick up and record motion at all (especially with lots of back and forth motion like unloading groceries)
*In the end I will be returning it and trying something else.
The cameras were very easy to install. I love that it is wireless because, who wants to deal with a bunch of wires. No wires means I can install it myself and don't need to hire a professional. Also If you decide you don't like the camera placement, it can easily be move. It takes two screws to screw in the wall mount. The wall mount is magnetic, so the camera is only attached using the built in magnet. The magnet is very strong so it holds in place very well. You would have to pull with force to get it off.
The batteries last me about 8 weeks before they need to be recharged. Our cameras are in active areas like the front door and the driveway and they are running 24/7. I would think that in less active areas the battery life may extend past the 8 weeks. I would definitely recommend using the rechargeable ones because the batteries are expensive, around $10 each. Changing the batteries is very simple and takes like 30 second.
They can be used inside or outside. Ours are all outside. No issues so far. They work in the cold the heat or the rain no problem. I would recommend getting one of those silicon covers to protect your camera. We didn't buy them but our cameras are in areas that do not get wet. (carport and front porch with awning)
The video quality can be set to what ever you want. We keep ours on the medium quality setting. High quality video setting is excellent quality but it obviously takes up a lot of memory on your phone or other device you have it synced with. The low quality video would give you the most space but picture is not as great. On medium setting the picture quality is still very good and clear. It can take videos during the day or at night. You can set it to take photo or video upon motion detection. You will be alerted via cell phone or email. I have it set the app on my cell phone will chime when when there is activity. You can also set it to just vibrate or email.
