Editorial Reviews

Review

“For real calamity, Richard Horne is your man, and “A Is for Armageddon” is his illustrated catalog of all the ways you and the world might bite it. In his hands the means to the End become wonders to behold...[A] Technicolor parade of visual metaphors.” (New York Times)

“A catalog of potentially life-on-earth-ending catastrophes that will warm a pessimist’s heart…Horne takes a decidedly tongue-in-cheek approach to the end of days, reveling, like any good pessimist, in the sheer misery of it all. His compendium is colorfully illustrated and quite exhaustive.” (The New Yorker)

“Horne gives us an Armageddon that’s vivid and flashy with hip characterizations and humor that’s the equivalent of the comic relief in a Shakespearean tragedy….Don’t let the jokes and splashy colors fool you, though. He’s as thoughtful as he is comprehensive.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Richard Horne’s beautifully illustrated new book ‘A Is for Armageddon: An Illustrated Catalogue of Disasters’ is the perfect last-minute gift for the end of days alarmist on your holiday list.” (Flavorpill)

“A beautifully illustrated, delightfully dystopian guide to the apocalypse.” (BrainPickings.org)

From the Back Cover

Doomsday . . . Judgment Day . . .

Day of Reckoning . . . The Apocalypse . . .

As the man with the sandwich board might say, "The end of the world is nigh." Nobody knows for sure whether it will be an act of God, a natural event, or a man-made disaster that causes the final bell to toll for humankind, but it is surely primed and ready to clang.

A Is for Armageddon is your ruthlessly clever and gorgeously hopeless guide to the possible—if not imminent—ultimate destruction of our civilization and planet. From animal flatulence to economic collapse to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—from lethal genetic modification to runaway obesity, super volcanoes, and World War III—the seeds of our doom have been sown . . . and our most dire possible fates have been stunningly illustrated in this edifying and uniquely entertaining volume of inescapable horrors, fatal missteps, and the end of everything.

"A is for Armageddon is a catalogue of a catalogue of disasters that are ready to befall the Earth and ultimately the human race. It has been designed, illustrated and written to give a concise guide of what to expect in the coming days, months, years and centuries. The book covers subjects that are way beyond our control, issues that have been caused or accelerated, directly or indirectly, by humankind's many busy hands and other situations that are just plain ridiculous. Written, illustrated and designed with an optimistically pessimistic twang, A is for Armageddon highlights what you should be looking out for, when you should be panicking, and just how long you've got before we're all due to visit the big dead dodo sanctuary in the sky."

I purchased this book because I have a fondness for Futurology, but was unaware that A is for Armageddon is actually a quasi-scientific, quasi-hilarious, quasi-snarky information packed directory of every imaginable disaster out there; I wasn't expecting it to be so funny. Subjects as diverse as Phil Plaits - Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End . . ., to Jared Diamond's - Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed: Revised Edition, to Rev. Hagee's - Financial Armageddon: We are in a battle for our very survival..., it's all in there. Plus, just about every page contains some colorful graphic, illustration, chart, or image, which is usually hysterical. In sum, this is a great book for encouraging Existential angsts in a style that only a Brit could pull-off.

Bought thinking this was a book cataloging disasters with some information and basis in reality. It's purported in some reviews to be something non-fiction but it's a complete quasi parody, and I guess that the author thinks he is writing something slightly clever or amusing, but I found it just plain stupid. I bought online using a mobile device so I didn't have the chance to preview. What a disappointment; took it with me on a flight to read and although a brand new barely touched book, I couldn't convince myself that it was worth the effort of putting it back into my bag; i left it on the plane to be thrown away.

This is a really fun book, although it doesn't include Zombies and there are some editorial errors. The tongue in cheek comments of the author increase the readability. Not an in depth compendium, it presents more of an overview with a dry, witty, commentary. Part of every disaster/armageddon reading list, if only for the satire and wit included.

This book is a very interesting read. I'm not big on science knowledge, but this is a great way to learn about all the sciences and the universe. I really enjoyed it and it was written with a good bit of tongue in cheek humor. Very educational.
