Armistice returns to Donnelly’s ravishing 1930s Art Deco-tinged fantasy world of the Nebula and Lambda Award-nominated Amberlough with a decadent, tumultuous mixture of sex, politics, and spies

“A hefty novel full of fascinating characters exploring oversized topics such as sexuality, music, culture, fascism, nationalism, class wars, revolution and love.” ―Shelf Awareness

In a tropical country where shadowy political affairs lurk behind the scenes of its glamorous film industry, three people maneuver inside a high stakes game of statecraft and espionage:

Lillian, a reluctant diplomat serving a fascist nation,

Aristide, an expatriate film director running from lost love and a criminal past,

―and Cordelia, a former cabaret stripper turned legendary revolutionary.

Each one harbors dangerous knowledge that can upturn a nation. When their fates collide, machinations are put into play, unexpected alliances are built, and long-held secrets are exposed. Everything is barreling towards an international revolt...and only the wiliest ones will be prepared for what comes next.

For
Amberlough:

“James Bond by way of Oscar Wilde.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Bracing [and] timely...Donnelly has successfully built upon her intricate, lush world of passionate spies and turncoats, and each character leaps off the page in this satisfying novel that succeeds on both grand an intimate scales.” Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Armistice

“Donnelly’s use of language, setting, and descriptions all serve to evoke a smoky, lustrous Art Deco atmosphere reminiscent of a 1930s theatrical production. Offer it to adventurous Le Carré fans: readers in search of espionage and political intrigue―with a dash of romance―against a distinctive backdrop.”
Booklist, on Armistice

“Donnelly returns readers to the world of
Amberlough (2017) in this sequel, in which the fallout of a fascist regime's triumph continues to haunt those who escaped it...or who thought they had. [For] readers who enjoy luxuriating in the book's rich prose, sharp dialogue, and detailed interpersonal histories.” Kirkus Reviews, on Armistice

For
Amberlough:

“James Bond by way of Oscar Wilde.”
―Holly Black

“Donnelly blends romance and tragedy, evoking gilded-age glamour and the thrill of a spy adventure, in this impressive debut. As heartbreaking as it is satisfying.” –
Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Donnelly’s striking debut brings a complex world of politics, espionage, and cabaret life to full vision. The emotional journeys of the characters as they struggle to survive in a society under siege by dark forces will strike a chord with readers as they race to the story’s conclusion.” ―
Library Journal, starred review, Debut of the Month

“A tightly woven and diverse cast of spies, criminals, cabaret bohemians, and lovers struggles to save what matters to each of them against a tide of rising fascism and violence in Donnelly's debut novel, set in a vaguely 1920s milieu….A sense of inevitable loss and futility permeates this rich drama. The fascists may never be defeated but only escaped―if the characters are willing to abandon the people they love. That dilemma will haunt them, as it haunts the reader.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

"
Amberlough grabbed me from the first page. It is beautiful, all too real, and full of pain. Read it. It will change you." ―Hugo Award-winning author Mary Robinette Kowal

"An astonishing first novel!"
―World Fantasy Award-winning author Ellen Kushner

"Sparkling with slang, full of riotous characters, and dripping with intrigue,
Amberlough is a dazzling romp through a tumultuous, ravishing world." ―Robert Jackson Bennett, winner of the Shirley Jackson Award and the Edgar Award

"It’s a terrific novel. Very Evelyn Waugh meets The Sandbaggers.”
―John Chu, Hugo-award winning author

"A peach softens and grows sweeter until it reaches a fragile state, lasting only about six hours, during which it's actually better than perfect--and then it goes off, it's gone, it's through. In
Amberlough Donnelly takes us to a city and culture just tipping from this pluperfect moment. What a rich and melancholy book; so tragic, so gay!" ―Kai Ashante Wilson, author of Sorcerer of the Wildeeps and the Nebula & World Fantasy finalist for "The Devil in America"

“This is the book we need right now.
Amberlough is a gorgeous, crucial reminder that even when the Fascists take over, people will fight back - no matter how flawed or frightened or damaged they might be, or how much they risk by doing so.” ―Sam J. Miller, finalist for the Nebula, World Fantasy, and Theodore Sturgeon Awards and winner of the Shirley Jackson Award

Amberlough offers a sharp, lush, sensual espionage Cabaret, a Weimar world of lovers, criminals and spies all floating toward the fire.” ―Max Gladstone, LAMBDA Literary Award finalist

"Intrigue and passions intertwine in
Amberlough – A city on the edge of political upheaval, glittering with decadence and riddled with spies! Be careful or you too will be lost in the whirl of the kind of glamour familiar in 1930s Shanghai or Weimar-era Berlin. Donnelley's debut is powerfully seductive and wrenching." ―Fran Wilde, author of Updraft

"A glittering cabaret of a novel, with show-stopping language on every page." ―
Lev AC Rosen, author of Depth

“Holy cow―this book is sharp, queer, sexy, and positively eviscerating. It's Cabaret meets spy novel in a lushly imagined fictional city, and a terrifyingly topical tale of fascism's rise. It's a brilliantly realized gut-punch. Highly recommended!”
―James L. Sutter, co-creator of the Pathfinder RPG series

"Lust and betrayal, intrigue and treachery, feints within feints within feints―
Amberlough will keep readers up late into the night. I look forward to more adventures from Lara Elena Donnelly." ―D.B. Jackson, author of the Thieftaker Chronicles

"Amberlough is the stiletto-sharp tale of an intelligence agent caught between corrupt handlers, a rising fascist regime, and his doomed passion for the notorious star of a sizzling underworld nightclub. Sexy and suspenseful, with characters who play for keeps, Donnelly's debut novel mixes secrets, spying, and outlawed love like a perfectly made cocktail... one that seduces before hitting you with an unforgettable kick." ―A.M. Dellamonica, LAMBDA Literary Award finalist for Child of a Hidden Sea

"Weirdly elegant, wholly engaging, Donnelly's
Amberlough is a richly visualized and genuinely fascinating novel. I couldn't put it down." ―Josh Lanyon, author of the Adrien English Mysteries, and USA Book News Award for GLBT Fiction and the Eppie Award winner

"If you put David Bowie, China Mieville, and
Shakespeare in Love into a blender, you might get something as rich and frothy as Amberlough. An intricate tale of society where nothing is as it seems, and where the political is all-too-personal." ―Cecilia Tan, author of The Struck by Lightning series

[light spoilers without names]

In this, the second volume of the Amberlough Dossier, there are tested loyalties, impassioned affairs, and a constant tightrope that must be walked by every character, lest their hearts be shown as they are. With the takeover of the Ospie party, the surrounding nations have been thrown into tumult. Many laypeople within Gedda's borders resist the ruling party, but face brutality and the risk of vanishing entirely. But some of the resistance are more than laypeople: the Catwalk rebels derail trains, a film producer deals in weapons, and some of the Ospie's most inner agents may not have the party's best wishes at heart. As with her first (beautiful, tumultuous) novel, Donnelly explores the many glittering facets of the human heart within each of her cast. Much of this tale revolves around the relationship between a mother, stuck in a place of power and immorality, and her son, a boy used as leverage for her dutiful work. Characters from the pages of 'Amberlough' emerge again, opening and complicating the reader's windows into their minds and desires, and dancing with caution around the newer members on stage. But the only stages you'll find here are only mentioned in passing: instead, we're thrown into the tropical, silken world of Porashtu's wealthiest citizenry, royalty included, along with glimpses into bleak highlands and bleaker Ospie offices. Plots are hatched, trusts are doubted, and the flames of the dubiously-elected President Acherby continue to spread, threatening not only the lives of our beleaguered cast, but the millions of commonfolk in the nations surrounding. Detection, despair, and hope all swing precariously together in a gorgeous (and, admittedly, stress-inducing) trapeze act, and the reader swings with them too, never knowing whether who will stick the landing. Both a more than worthy successor to its impressive predecessor and a firm launchpad into the final part of the Dossier, this is a vibrant, swirling, incredible book. Read it and embrace the tightrope that is Donnelly's fantastic pen!

I enjoy the author’s writing style as well as her characters. This book, like the previous book, feels very much to me like a hip, sexy, and other world Casablanca. The loss of one star was because the book feels, reads, and ends very much as the middle book to a series, i.e. some pieces are moved on the chess board but the beginning and end of the game are very obviously missing.
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018
I'm giving the novel full stars, as it's well written, well plotted, full of interesting people, a fascinating setting.

Having said that, I must confess to enjoying Amberlough more. Nothing was certain in Amberlough. Fear drove characters to do horrible things. The plotting, the counter-plotting, the betrayals were unpredictable. The love affair at the heart of the novel was understated, with both men unable to either trust one another, or to admit that they had feelings for one another beyond sex and politics. The fall of Gedda into a fascist state was inevitable, heartbreaking. Anyone could die. Anyone could betray. Beloved characters could be caught, tortured, mutilated. I never knew what would happen next, and loved it.

This novel is, in comparison, predictable. The betrayals and murders are toned down. Immediate danger is also toned down as Geddan ex-pats are relatively safe in a stable, powerful kingdom. The Ospie presence is reduced to an embassy with an ineffective leader. Cyril is replaced with his sister, whose story--woman tries to save child and reclaim lost love while realizing she needs a man to lean on--is predictable. Aristide is now a lovelorn director who's given up most of his overt femininity. I fear he's on the verge of going full Rambo in his search for Cyril.

Which all makes it sound as if I didn't like this novel. I did! It's excellent. However, I didn't love it, the way I did Amberlough.

And after all that, I want the conclusion, and I want it now!

I think this was a good follow-up to Amberlough, and I absolutely can't wait for the third book in this trilogy. The last 80 pages or so are incredibly fast paced and so much happens. While the book does drag in the middle a bit, it pays off because it sets up everything for those 80 pages.

I love fantasy that gets into both larger politics of a world, but also how those politics affect individuals. I don't want to spoil anything, but there are important characters who are very much an emotional plot of the book.

I'm also glad this ended on a more hopeful note, and like I said at the beginning, can't wait for book 3 (and secretly wish we were getting more than 3).
