About the Author
John Marx, CPP John helps police officers and other law enforcement professionals manage stress and build wellness by developing tactical resilience. Armor Your Self ™ is a total health and fitness program to help police officers and other first responders survive their toxic careers. John was a Police Officer for twenty-three years and served as a Hostage Negotiator for nineteen of those years. He worked in both a sheriff’s office and a municipal police department. He has served as a patrol officer, media liaison officer, crime prevention officer and burglary detective. He was also the administrator of his city’s Community Policing project which they called Community Oriented Governance because it involved over 70 city employee volunteers from all city departments serving as neighborhood team leaders and team members. John retired from law enforcement in 2002. When one of his friends, also a former police officer, committed suicide at age 38, John began researching the problems that trauma and negative stress create for police officers. In 2008 John founded The Law Enforcement Survival Institute (LESI) and began writing on CopsAlive.com. The mission of both LESI and CopsAlive is to save the lives of the people who save lives! John holds a lifetime Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification from the American Society For Industrial Security. The Law Enforcement Survival Institute gathers information, strategies and tools to help law enforcement professionals plan for happy, healthy and successful careers, relationships and lives and distributes that information through it's training programs and on www.CopsAlive.com. As well as working with law enforcement agencies John also works as a private consultant and has provided training in the leadership development programs of several Fortune 100 corporations. I dislike the term awesome, but I must use it in this case to describe this book. This massive book contains hundreds of exercises and techniques that a first responder, or any person for that matter, can use to consciously improve their overall wellness. We speak about, but often neglect the civilian workers who experience identical feelings and sometimes nightmares that plague this line of work. And don’t forget the family, our precious loved ones who have to relate to the day-to-day worries we are presented with.
The author has blogged, lectured on and now written about several key concepts techniques that are vital to those in blue:
• Blue Trauma Syndrome
• The 7 Key Factors of Tactical Resilience™
• Comprehensive Survival Skills to Save Your Life and Your Health
• Critical Concepts for Stress Reduction
• How to Armor Your Agency™
• The Concept of True Blue Valor™
The testimonials attributed to the book and the author come from the “Who’s Who” of leaders in this field. As an “end” user, I feel the impetus to put in a good word too. Highly recommended!!!
Cops are fairly well trained with their firearms and defensive tactics, but as an industry we tend to burry our heads in the sand about the real threat-the silent killer of law enforcement officers.
Armor Your Self is a complete manual providing solutions and resources for the dangers of law enforcement that plague virtually every officer: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, suicide, fatigue, depression, PTSD.
Every officer and family member should have this resource early in their career and return to it often.
A good read that could be used as a textbook or personal wellness guide for an officer at any point in their career.
