Used to connect and power my Raspberry Pi (RPi) under Linux Mint 15, not additional drivers required.

Below is the wiring diagram used to connect with the RPi:

It works great, when you've got the correct drivers for your OS

Make sure you track down drivers for your OS first before you purchase this one. The device itself worked flawlessly for low level firmware flashing. The latest driver for the PL2303HX can be found here [...]

The URL above also has support documentation as none is provided with the product. The PL2303HX USB to TTL converter connected fine at a full 115,200 kbps speed and got the job done. For the price and a little downloading, it can't be beat.

5V VCC, 3.3V Tx/R

Recognized by Linux with no issues.

The adapter outputs 5VCC but 3.3V TX/RX. I thought at first this was causing me issues, but it turns out that I forgot to cross the Tx/Rx on the cable with the Tx/Rx on my board (Tx from the adapter goes to Rx on the board, Rx on the adapter goes to Tx on the board). Once I fixed this, the adapter works perfectly to access the serial connection in my ZyXel NSA320 NAS box.

Windows Compatibility Fix (Counterfeit?)

WARNING: If you receive one of these and it does not work straight away in Windows (any version) then it is a counterfeit Chinese knockoffs according to Prolific (source: http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41%E2%80%8E).

I would suggest your return it immediately and report to Amazon, but if you're like me and you didn't test it on Windows right away, follow the instructions on left brain tinkering blog (source: http://leftbraintinkering.blogspot.com/2013/05/usb-to-serial-prolific-2303-device.html). It really works.

This is a PL-2303 XA / HXA chip

I ordered this cable to be used with a Raspberry Pi connected to a Windows 8 computer (Microsoft Surface Pro). The cable was detected just fine by Windows 8, but the device would not start. After some research, I discovered that the HXA chip model is not supported by Prolific for Windows 8, and that is what is in this cable. So warning: if you want to use Windows 8, then this is not the cable for you. Perhaps more research before I purchased this I could have figured that out, but it isn't made very clear.

Regardless, this cable works just fine with Windows 7, and I was able to implement a workaround on Windows 8 to get it to work. The workaround is to use the Prolific 1.5.0 drivers (no longer available on Prolific's website, and not supported on Windows 8). You also have to turn off the automatic update of windows drivers, which is not recommended. So, although this workaround works, it isn't optimal and is disappointing.

Giving 4 stars - product works fine and quality meets price. Wish I knew it wasn't compatible with Windows 8, but glad I have work around.

This device installed automatically in Windows 7 Professional and came right up and worked. A wiring diagram would have been nice as I had to come back to Amazon to confirm what wires did what:

"four colored-wire : black?GND/ red?VCC /white?RXD /green?TXD"

Using it with a custom PIC18 board and it connected right up to the TTL header and starting dumping data to a Windows terminal program as designed.

Great tool for the money.

Works great on Linux

I'm using this with an STM32L152 Discovery card with the USB plugged into a Linux system at 19.2Kbaud. It works great! Linux recognizes it as /dev/ttyUSB0 and I just plug the pins onto the right GPIOs of my Discovery card. I *can* use the +5 to power the Discovery card, but I've just been letting it dangle and powering the card from the programming cable.
