Army of the Dead - 1 Star - Nah
I'd have given 2 stars if everyone had died, but alas, the easily predictable couple were left at the end.
The description is inaccurate. A professor hosts a little soiree in the Mexican? desert. A small group of students join him. They ride around in Baja buggies while the professor secretly searches for the lost city of El Dorito. Well, he finds the gold. He stirs up the curse and the whole group must die. [Give me a moment, please. He had half a map. A mercenary had the other half. When put together they, of course, reveal the location of the lost city. How did these map bearers meet? Craigslist? Did one of 'em run an ad in Soldier of Fortune, "Have half the map to the city of El Dorado. Would like to meet someone with the other half." Why did a map exist? Why was it divided into halves? If a map existed all these centuries, someone would have used it to search for the lost city. Any who find it are killed. Shouldn't the map be in the city where the guy carrying got killed?]
There's far too much crap to detail. Let's just say it's cheap. Not much for SFX. It's formulaic. Script was probably written by software. There are no likeable characters.
Highlights: minimal profanity - no titillation [inappropriate nudity or clothing]
If you like bad sci-fi/fantasy, this should be on your Must See list. Be warned; it's not bad enough to be funny.

Editorial Reviews
In 1590, Coronado dispatched a division of one thousand men to find the legendary city of gold, El Dorado. Those men never returned. While searching Baja peninsula caves as part of an archeological expedition, a university professor and his students unwittingly unleash a long dormant curse. They soon find themselves in a life or death battle with an army of skeletal warriors, the undead remnants of Coronado s conquistadors.

"Army of the Dead" is not a gory violent movie, like most horror movies today. It does have it's charm but is a watered down version of "Army of Darkness". This is probably a attempt to make "Army of Darkness" with a modern twist. I still think "Army of Darkness" is way better and the effects are almost the same. This is your typical B-horror movie without the gore. I would watch this movie again and it holds down an interesting concept. The skeleton army is pretty cool for a low budget film. I didn't mind the bad acting, because all B-movies have bad acting. If you have kids who are in there early teens this is a great movie for you. There is no nudity, I can't recall any profanity, and there is little to no gore. So if you like horror movies that you can watch with your teenage kids this is a rare movie for you. I thought it was an ok movie that is rare in the horror genre. If you are a gore fan stay away you will find this movie cheesy and boring. This is something you would find on the sci-fi channel.

First thing everyone in the group is told "helmets on". Next scene all are driving the "Bugs" without helmets.
Heard mention that these are racing machines, no roll cages or 5 point harness's.
And it only gets worse from there.

The movie starts off a little slow as you're getting to know the characters, but about a quarter into it you're on the edge of your seat and stay there until the very end. It was non-stop action. Even the special effects were really good. For a "B" movie the acting was fantastic. The characters were very believable. Ross Kelly and Stephanie Marchese were awesome. Both are deinitely "A" actors. I'd like to see a sequel, if it's as well written as this one was.

This is not a real bad movie, I'll keep it on hand along with my B collection. All in All 3 stars is good enough for this one.

This film has a pretty good concept going for it, with a cursed Anasazi treasure guarded against would-be thieves by a skeletal army which recruits each one it kills into the guardian force. It has a good hook for the opening, with a force of conquistadors hunting for El Dorado, being hacked down by skeleton vengeance (seen as shadows on the wall, which eked out the fx budget). After that it is pretty much all downhill. Cut to the present day and a group of holidaying Americans indulging in some desert racing, which one of them (naughty Professor Vasquez) is using as a cover for his intention to find the gold and illegally smuggle it out of Mexico. Far, far too much time is spent establishing these pedestrian characters and their banal interaction, and every line of it cliched beyond redemption. We have the tarty ex-girlfriend trying to break up her lover's relationship, the hired muscle turning on their boss, the rugged veteran tutting over the greenhorns and even the ghost stories round the campfire which allows the professor to elaborate on the legend of the cursed gold. Finally it gets around to finding the gold and the rising of the undead army, but even then there is absolutely no tension or drama involved. We see hordes of highly disciplined identical skeleton warriors - the archers, the swordsmen, the spearmen - marching to music which is very reminiscent of Jason and the Argonauts, but somehow they only ever reach the heroes one at a time, which results in very poorly done cgi blood splashing about. Finally young hero John saves the day after a really badly choreographed battle with the chief skeleton, and drives off into the sunset with his girlfriend. I can forgive a low budget movie having cheap fx and in, say, a thousand conquistadors actually being four guys in a fake tunnel, but I can't forgive the insultingly bad scripting, acting, continuity and just about everything else this film has to offer. I wouldn't even give it one star if there was an option for zero.
