By J. R. Trtek on October 2, 2013
Format: Audio CD
This are bright, energetic performances on original instruments of eight "overtures" by Thomas Arne. They are all drawn from his theater music, I believe, and mostly three-movement works that I suppose we would view today as miniature proto-symphonies. Each is quite engaging on its own terms, and the renditions are exquisite. However, they are not alone. Collegium Musicum 90 under Simon Standage also recorded these works, and the performances are remarkably similar to these. Moreover, that second disc -- on Chandos' Chaconne label -- also offers music from Alfred by Arne. With extra material and a much better price for a new copy, I'd go with the Standage, while still admiring the Hogwood.
