I followed the advice of another reviewer here, heeding the recommendation to give the unit plenty of space while operating it so as not to activate the thermal safety trigger. And yes, it does get very hot, and yes because the top is cast iron it remains hot for a very long time. Cast iron is a righteous conductor.
So, it would figure, if one is looking to accomplish a low simmer, or to gently warm something one should start at the lowest setting wait a few minutes for it to heat up, then gradually turn up the heat IF needed. And keep in mind the lowest setting is when you turn the nob JUST enough to turn it on. Again, because the top is cast iron the heat will remain so it is much easier to increase the heat rather than decrease it.
Also, if you're looking to boil something this nifty little burner will bring a pot to boil relatively quickly, which is nice.
In summation, this burner is not expensive, nor is it intuitive. It does what you tell it to, and for the price it's a rather good value.
There were other favorable reviews, which helped me choose this Aroma hot plate over a traditional coil type, but I wanted to add my thoughts about it. I wasn't familiar with Aroma and would have, of course, preferred to buy something from a reputable brand. For the reasonable price I paid, though, I didn't mind pioneering while I was relaxing in Arizona.
I discovered that a setting of four was enough to bring my little pot of water to a rolling boil, but if I turned it up to six I got the boil much faster. Then I could turn the hot plate off and put my little skillet on it to warm tortillas. I put the pot back on after that, filled with cold water, and it would heat the water enough to wash a sink of dishes with it! My husband put a tinfoil pie pan on top of the hot plate, filled it with water, and cooked tamales. Multiple times! I was worried the mess which seeped through the tiny holes in the tin would not come off, but a little soapy water on a washcloth was all it took! We enjoyed several hot meals at our vacation house thanks to the Aroma hot plate.
When it's time to pack the hotplate for travel, after using it like I did, I do want to warn you that you need to leave it turned off for several hours prior. Being an electric cooktop, it does take a long long time fully cool.
Now that we've been back home a little while, and Mother's Day is coming up, I imagine I will pull the hotplate out once more. This time I think I will heat up some dipping cheese for everyone!
Since Wal Mart and Target no longer carry hot plates in store, and what they may offer online is sub-par, and because the high end hot plates come with high end price tags, I highly recommend this Aroma hot plate for casual and fun use. It'll help you make good hot food! It may even last the test of time, based on what I've seen so far!
Cons: Packaging was shoddy. I'm in awe that it wasn't damaged during delivery. The right side burner heats up much slower than the left side. There are vents on the bottom. If you have laminate counter tops, this heat will delaminate your Formica. You'll need to put it on something or risk damage to your countertop. I put mine on a marble cutting board.
Overall, it's inexpensive and works. The quality is kinda "meh" but I think it will do the job just fine. If it breaks down, I'll be back to update this.

Piece of junk. After 38 days of moderate use the large burner suddenly quit on the medium setting.Read more
