There are so many solid ideas on what to consider before setting out and for the trip duration.
I learned so much, and feel now if i travel to the Caribean, for example, i will know just when to leave, where to shop, eat, tie my dinghy up,get a visa,(thesmoothest way)where to anchor, what lights to look for and what way points to use.
Something like this written down condenses all those cockpit chats and exchanges of experience and "how to"s" into one book from a worthy reliable source.
Moreover, it is written for you, not just about the author, it reads as if you are really doing it, and if you aren't .....you will feel motivated, equipped and confident to just do it!
This book is worth it's cyberweight in gold, value added is the useability for various trip components.
For example, even though not undertaking a circumnavigation, i shall be travelling out to the Pacific this year so will use it for this area comprehensively.
I was invited to crew from the Caribean across the Pacific recently, and i cross matched the information in this book with the Skipper's responses to my questions about trip plans, timing and vessel preparation.
As a result I am giving that one a miss based on mariner competence and knowledge!
The author is so encouraging and so openly sharing, clearly he has done it all and loved it all and would genuinely like to see others gain from his lifetime of experience.
A valuable tool for all mariners and also for crewpersons, whether circumnavigating or planning a cruise in any part of the world. It will save you so much money and time in how to do stuff...... when you get there, as well as how to get there.
I will seem such an experienced crewperson now when i humbly identify which light or mark to look for when entering a far off port ...or the name of an "in the know" local taxi driver.......wherever!!
This book will be informing cockpit conversations all over the world for years to come.
Kind of like a mariners lonely planet of the sea.......................
I gave this "value for money" book five stars.
It is difficult for a non cruiser to get your head around the lifestyle of cruising.
This book gives a detailed view of how he lives the life of cruising over 25 years.
The maps, the contacts and his point of view make this book a must read.
This book literally changed my life, It gave me the information and confidence.
One of his comments "you will have no rough weather if you do not have a schedule" changed my view of cruising.
I now have a cruising boat and I am out there living the dream.
A must read for anyone contemplating the cruising lifestyle.
