Now this is important--no matter how old the modem is that your new one is replacing, you CANNOT get Comcast to stop charging you the monthly modem rental fee unless you bring in the old modem to a Comcast center. They sent me a letter telling me specifically that, because my modem was "end of life" and so old, I didn't have to return it to Comcast; I could simply recycle it properly ("contact your waste hauler or local municipality") and that no unreturned equipment charge would apply. It's a darn good thing I came to understand that the letter was completely wrong and did not follow its advice and dispose of the old modem, otherwise Comcast would never have stopped charging me the monthly modem rental fee.
Some tips- be sure to write down your modem's serial number and all the mac numbers on the unit before you hook it up. Comcast will ask for this information so have it ready.
If your phone service is through Comcast, you will need a cell phone to call in for activation. The process was fairly easy and should last about 20 minutes. Mine took longer because I reset my router before calling Comcast. I did this because the instructions I found online on how to switch modems included a step to reset my router. As a result, the internet would not come on and the Comcast tech did not know why. I hung up with Comcast and figured out that I had to re-install the router software (using the CD) it to get the internet to work. Therefore, I would recommend skipping the step of resetting your wireless router if you find similar instructions. Or be prepared to re-install the router software if internet will not come on. Modem activation should only take about 15 minutes on the phone if it goes smoothly.
If you have Comcast phone, there's a separate activation number to call once cable and internet are working. That was a breeze, it took less than 10 minutes.
Last, if you have additional boxes with DVR service- I had to restart one of my two additional boxes to access my saved DVR recordings. The DVR function showed an error code and said none of my saved programs were available and to check the power on the main/living room box. I put on the main box and the programs were there. So I rebooted my bedroom cable box and sure enough, shutting it off for a minute then turning it on and letting it reconnect did the trick.
I hope my mistakes help someone out there. I am very happy that I bought this modem and it works perfectly!
Works great with my Cisco wireless router. I get the maximum advertised download speed with this setup.
