Arrows is a well written, succinctly detailed and convincingly balanced true account by a former Scientology spy. It is unlike any other spy recounting because the criminal and civil actions underlying the drama have been finally disposed of and there are no longer any government secrets, at least to the writer’s knowledge, that have to be withheld.
Regardless of your views (or interest or disinterest) about Scientology, the criminal actions by both the individual Scientologists and the FBI, INS and Florida local government officials that form the misguided cast of characters in Arrows are as tragically relevant today as they were in the days when they were running those ops. Sadly, only certain Scientologists were the subject of civil or criminal prosecutions. Culpable government officials and law enforcement (like the local police who concealed documents in response to valid subpoenas and INS officials who illegally opened their files to private litigators) walked away with impunity. Sound modernly familiar?
Mr. Vannier is candid in his agenda about coming out with the book only now so you can judge whatever bias he may have on your own. His motive? Scientology’s recent forced disconnection from his daughter as revenge for his participation in a reform campaign directed at Chairman of the Board David Miscaviage (COB) and the Church. The focus of this campaign was to independently investigate the upper Church management, completely controlled by COB, for not complying with California non-profit corporation law. Like Russia’s Putin, COB is not a fan of free speech or even legal transparency. Just ask COB’s wife, the LAPD tried.
Despite Vannier’s respect and admiration for the religion and technology of Scientology, he has neither of these for COB. COB’s physical and mental abuse of management staff was well documented even before Arrows was published. Vannier expands on COB’s despotic and psychotic control over what has become his personal criminal enterprise that he singularly controls from his desert outpost. His criminal enterprise is composed of an alphabet soup of tax free corporations (e.g. RST, CST, CSI) subsidized by every citizen of the U.S. through the IRS’s tax exemption which was granted in 1993.
Mr. Vannier further incurred COB’s wrath by pleading that state attorney generals should use their enforcement powers over nonprofit corporations to require checks and balances (which Hubbard instituted but COB circumvented) and the IRS should impose sanctions against the Church under federal laws that apply to tax exempt organizations. Vannier argues the Church administration can be fixed. Vannier must also believe that all miracles are possible. But based on the account of Vannier and numerous other recent Church insiders that have gone public, as long as the current COB’s brutal rein continues, his criminal enterprise masquerading as a religious administration neither can nor ever will be fixed. This is unfortunate for the many dedicated parishioners paying inflated prices for Scientology services because they are forced to subsidize COB’s paranoid public relations fiascos which drive COB’s endless litigation, surveillance and harassment campaigns he continues to this day.
Vannier speculates that the Church, in particular the infamous Guardian’s Office that conducted the clandestine ops, was the victim of government plants who initiated much of the criminal activity. His speculation is convincing, especially in light of what we have learned from other government operations since that time and the culpable individuals that escaped all punishment. This backstory makes Vannier’s punishment of disbarment (in addition to his later despicable treatment and broken promises of defense reimbursement by COB) all the more unfair as well as completely disproportional and unprecedented in the legal profession.*

Like many reviewers, I could not put this book down either.
The author is a very skilled writer with a pure-hearted message and a great story to tell. This is a must read, especially for any long-time Scientologist.

It fills in so many blanks and validates so many things that one may have sensed but were "not sure about". I knew some of the people mentioned it this book a little bit. There were some great people in the Guardian's Office back in the 1960s and 1970s. They exposed many evils extant in society back in the day....and not only ones which were attacking the Church of Scientology. They also exposed psychiatric abuses such as electro shock "therapy", deep sleep "drug therapy", as well as governmental waste and abuses such as the "cointelpro" program. This story is seldom told or even known about.

This book illuminates the distinction between the spiritual philosophy of Scientology and the abuses of the current Church of Scientology. It does not paint both with the same brush as many recently COS exposes have done.

This story also illustrates the fact that when one becomes a "spook" or a spy (for any organization), one has usually agreed to gain the trust of some person or organization and then betray them. Inevitably, this act puts the betrayer in a condition of treason to some person or some group. There is no avoiding it. This story also illustrates the fact that betraying the trust of others has negative ramifications for the betrayers (including Mr. Vannier) as well as for those who have been betrayed.

I highly recommend this book.

Since I'm a pretty busy person I decided to read about 50 pages of “Arrows in the Dark”a night and that was giving it high priority. I succeeded for 2 nights. The third day was another matter as I let the phone ring, dirty dishes pile up, didn't even go to the net-I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN!! I almost read the entire book in one day! Wow!! What an exciting and well written read!

I am a long term practicing Scientologist, who is no longer in the Church. This book explains so much of what has happened and how we have a very corrupt person running it now!! Scientology was booming and fun when Ron Hubbard was around. A lot of us didn't know what was going on behind the scenes and the absolute harrowing stuff depicted in Merrells book.

I not only want to thank Merrell for giving us such transparency, but for having soldiered for a great cause in a very hostile and often crazy environment. He was fighting not only the enemy outside, but within. Of course when there are enemies within, they can make the organization and the subject look very bad indeed!! There are those in the government who have been very determined to destroy Scientology. Why is that? Because it works and does make people better and more able!! It's an insane reason for destruction, but should get people looking at the real target, which is NOT Ron Hubbard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A piece of the puzzle

The story this book tells was well hidden for many years.Even today, various interests may not be to happy that it was eventually written and published. As it elicits new evaluation, those who think in labels and simple categories of black and white may take the chance to discard some bias. This book is a statement of facts in a war of propaganda.
Very well written. Couldn't put it down.

The personal experience of this Scientologists (since 1972) and lawyer and staff of the former Guardian Office proves the take over of the Church of Scientology by evil forces: The man behind US government with the help of CIA, FBI, and other agencies. Co-Intelpro was not abandoned but this book proves, that it is still active for the control of this church.
