“A sweet high-school twist on Greek mythology with added substance about teen parenting and breaking out of a bad relationship.” —Booklist

“A great mythological take on love, heartache, and teen pregnancy.” —VOYA

“Gorzelanczyk’s debut blends a light myth-meets-modern premise with weightier reflections about the struggles of a teenage parent . . . entertaining.” —Publishers Weekly

Format: Hardcover
Being a teen undergod should be enough pressure, but when your dad's Cupid and you're on your first mission with two love arrows and you've already been a tad careless and clueless, it's the perfect setup for disaster. Meet Aaryn who's in Wisconsin outside a dance with his girlfriend Phoebe, also a cupid in training. Their mission is to smite two couples with the golden arrows and create two perfect romances. Phoebe's arrows do the trick, but after Aaryn hits Karma Clark, he realizes to his dismay, that the arrow destined for her boyfriend, Danny, is a dud. The cupids agree to lie about the mistake because the consequences they'd face aren't pretty.
Fast forward a year. An audit picks up the mistake and Aaryn is sent back to fix things, or face really unpleasant consequences, but there's no arrow this time, making things a lot more challenging. In the meantime, Karma's given birth to a daughter and is desperately in love with Danny while trying to balance motherhood, school and her nearly derailed dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Danny, however has become a lying, self-centered and immature jerk, incapable of being either a boyfriend or a dad. Aaryn finds the challenge at first impossible, but the more he's around Karma, the fuzzier his mission becomes.
This is a book where you know early on the destination, but it's the journey to arrive there that's enchanting and mesmerizing. Aaryn and Karma are great main characters, worth rooting for even at those times you despair of things turning out well. I'll leave it to future readers to find out for themselves if that happens. Teens liking a new twist on romance or who have been desperately in love that wasn't returned will really like this book. I'd recommend it for any school or public library.

Summary (from Goodreads):

People don’t understand love. If they did, they’d get why dance prodigy Karma Clark just can’t say goodbye to her boyfriend, Danny. No matter what he says or does or how he hurts her, she can’t stay angry with him . . . and can’t stop loving him. But there’s a reason why Karma is helpless to break things off: she’s been shot with a love arrow.

Aaryn, son of Cupid, was supposed to shoot both Karma and Danny but found out too late that the other arrow in his pack was useless. And with that, Karma’s life changed forever. One pregnancy confirmed. One ballet scholarship lost. And dream after dream tossed to the wind.

A clueless Karma doesn’t know that her toxic relationship is Aaryn’s fault . . . but he’s going to get a chance to make things right. He’s here to convince Danny to man up and be there for Karma. But what if this god from Mount Olympus finds himself falling in love with a beautiful dancer from Wisconsin who can never love him in return?

This fast-paced debut novel explores the internal & external conflicts of a girl who finds herself inexplicably drawn to a boy who seemingly doesn't reciprocate her feelings, touching on the issues of love, sex and responsibility, with a heroine struggling to control her destiny--perfect for fans of Katie McGarry's novels and MTV’s 16 and Pregnant.

What I Liked:

This book was recommended to me by Kathy MacMillan in October, which is how I discovered the novel. I'll be honest - this definitely isn't something I'd typically read.

When I first heard about this book, I fell in love with both the cover and the synopsis, and it instantly because one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. Usually when I’m incredibly excited about a book, I end up not enjoying it as much as I had hoped. That really isn’t the case with Arrows, though. No, Arrows deserves way more than five stars. It’s one of the most original, entertaining stories that I have ever read (and I’ve read more books than I can count), and it is the type of book that makes you forget about everything else while you’re reading. It truly is an engaging reading experience that you won’t soon forget!

“Everything had changed so fast. One pregnancy test confirmed. One scholarship lost. Me, a ballerina, tripping through life.”

Meet Karma. Karma was going along through high school, enjoying her life. She had a boyfriend who she cared for, an amazing ballet scholarship on the horizon, which would take her to her dream school, a prestigious performing arts school in New York. However, all that is put on hold and in danger of being gone forever, after one night at a homecoming dance with said boyfriend, Danny.

Aaryn, son of Eros, is taking his final exam so that he can officially become a cupid. His mentor and proctor, Phoebe, has accompanied him to his final test – using a pair of matching arrows in order to make a couple fall in love. As Phoebe shoots her arrows at a couple outside the homecoming dance, and makes a perfect match, Aaryn has a problem…he used one of the arrows on the girl, and then realized that the arrow does not have a match – thus leading that girl to be hopelessly in love with the boy she is with, but he doesn’t feel the same way.
