This book is a graphic novel made of storyboards from the film. The hardcover is even sized like a normal trade paperback. The movement arrows remain in some storyboards. Storyboards are also cut up to fit into comic panel shapes you typically see. There are no speech bubbles but the whole story is narrated. The story isn't too bad, at least it's complete.
The art is rough as you can expect from a graphic novel. If you're an artist, maybe you can learn a thing or two about staging the scene.
Overall, this book is a like a weirdly mixed cocktail. It's more of a graphic novel than artbook that's for sure. I wish publishers and authors would stop putting "Art of" in book titles when they clearly are not artbooks.
(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
This is not one of those books.
It's a graphic novel. Uniquely, this is a graphic novel that follows the movie (sort of), but is told from the POV of a character who is not featured (or even mentioned) in the movie. It also hints at a sequel, which I'm guessing will not be forthcoming, since the box office wasn't great for this movie.
So, once again I've been surprised by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This is not the book story, and not the movie story. I can't wait to see which new story I stumble into next.
If you collect "Art of..." books, this will not be an addition to your collection. If you collect graphic novels, this might be right up your alley. It was difficult to rate this book, because it's not my thing, but I feel it succeeds at what it tries to be. Also: brief cartoon nudity, so be advised of that before you hand it off to a kid.
From the Amazon blurb:
"This deluxe edition contains never-before-seen storyboards, concept art, production illustrations, and costume designs, as well as drawings from visionary director Timur Bekmambetov. This behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation of the hit film also features commentary by Bekmambetov, along with several others who helped bring this extraordinary film to life. Don't miss out on this rare, behind-the-scenes look into the creation of one of the most talked about new movies of the year, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter!"
It would appear that the publisher (or Amazon) didn't know what they were selling. Because the book described above would be awesome. I'd buy that book too.

As other reviewers have stated this is a graphic novel (despite the product description which apparently is from the publisher as this same description is used on other sites). Read morePublished on July 19, 2012 by ArtGuy
