Editorial Reviews

Review

“This splendid introduction to American whiskey, told through its iconography and period cocktails, sure whets the appetite for a glass of the real thing!”
—Charles MacLean, author of World Whiskey

“As an immigrant to the United States, I knew little about American history until I started to research bourbon back in the 1990s. Reading The Art of American Whiskey was like taking a graduate course. Pour yourself two fingers of whiskey, then pore over this fascinating and incredibly beautiful book—it’s a grand way to relax.”
—Gary “gaz” Regan, author of The Negroni and coauthor of The Book of Bourbon and Other Fine American Whiskeys

"The Prohibition Era left a gap in America's knowledge of whiskey, leading to a slew of myths and misconceptions. Whiskey and spirits enthusiast Noah Rothbaum debunks some of these myths in his new book, "The Art of American Whiskey," which uses 100 vintage and modern labels to help tell the story of whiskey in America."
—Brittany Fowler, Business Insider

"Flip through, drink up and soak in a unique, visually delightful take on a distinctly American art form."
—Kat Kinsman, Tasting Table

"Many a book, blog and news article has been devoted to the topic of whiskey: the way it's aged, where to drink it, how to store it and serve it or pair it with food. But comparatively little attention has been paid to how whiskey is packaged. Which is a shame, really, when you think about how a beautiful, funny or fancy-looking label can influence which bottles we buy — and which we ignore — when shopping the whiskey aisle. Spirits and wine writer Noah Rothbaum felt that it was time that American whiskey labels had their day in the spotlight. His new book, The Art of American Whiskey, traces the history of surprisingly elaborate labels from the 1800s to today."
—Tove Danovich, NPR

"Noah Rothbaum follows the endearing history of how the great whiskey peddlers of America enticed us to try their products in the first place. Natural scenes, patriotism, frontier heroes, folkloric heroes, medicinal claims: very little was off limits for marketers looking to hawk their hooch. But this book isn't limited to commercial imagery. It's also a valuable history of the country as a whole—not to mention that it includes some pretty good cocktail recipes. "
—Jack Bettridge, Cigar Aficionado

I came of legal drinking age in 2003 in a small Ohio town just a stone’s throw from “The Dry Capital of the World,” a place where the ghost of prohibition still lingered. A person could buy “half proof” spirits in most grocery stores, but if they wanted real liquor they’d have to head to the state-run liquor. I’d heard rumors that those places were surrounded by cops and young drinkers faced particularly tough scrutiny. So due to unfounded fear, my first foray into drinking was half proof coconut rum from Meijer’s grocery store.

After a few months of typical male, twenty-something braggadocio my friends convinced me that coconut rum might taste great, go down easy, and ‘get the job done’, but it was definitely not cool. With visions of manliness dancing in my head my next purchase was a bottle of Early Times Bourbon (half proof of course). It didn’t take much for my palate to adjust. I had a natural affinity for the oaky, woodiness of that sweet brown liquor

That summer I graduated and took a job as a software developer in central Kentucky. I was unprepared for the culture shock of coming to the Bluegrass from my suburban life in central Ohio. People talked slower, the closest “big city” was almost an hour away, and drinking was socially taboo. However, despite everyone playing teetotaler in public, bourbon was everywhere! Along with thoroughbred racing and basketball, it was a lifestyle. Since I’m allergic to horses and sports I decided to integrate into my new home state through bourbon.

That was twelve years ago, but I still count myself a fan of all things bourbon and Noah Rothbaum’s The Art of American Whiskey is a unique, must have book for any whiskey fan’s library. What makes this book so special is the way it presents the history of whiskey.

I saw this and couldn't resist. I love history. I love design. And a book exploring both as it looked into American Whiskey and it's labeling over the decades sounded so interesting to me.

And it was! I was expecting the focus to just but on the labels different distilleries have used over time but it had quite a bit of history included as well. While Rothbaum doesn't have the most lively writing voice the subject matter kept my attention.

It was done in sections by decade(s) with a spot of history to open each chapter explaining life at the time, what the industry had been facing and similar then it dove into labels from those years with photos and brief little captions with each and then to close out each section there were a couple cocktails created or enjoyed during those years.

I loved the artwork and photos included. Both labels and black and white historical photos. They're not all crisp but that's to be expected. It was neat seeing labels change over the years. Seeing the designs and how world events and laws influenced the industry and it's art. Why there are lower proofs now days. What they did to survive Prohibition and becoming a "medical" whiskey. They've struggled something fierce since the late 1800s. Prohibition, The Great Depression, Wars, etc. It's an industry with an incredibly rocky past and that's been hit hard time and time again with many having to close doors because of it but that's resilient as hell. Whew.

This is a smallish hardback that's a little larger than a trade back book. It's got a coffee table vibe to it. An interesting look into a tiny slice of American history and all it's been through.

I was actually surprised when I chose this book to review and the depth of coverage within these pages. There is so much to learn. So much history lies within these pages and the story of how American Whiskey came about. This book covers 100 different labels showcased through the years. The images in this book are everything. You get a genuine feel for the authenticity of the information written through the photos. The photos alone tell a story. The author did an amazing job at including mini history lessons about Prohibition also.

I also was a big fan of reading about the different Distilling Legends. This book highlights individuals and families I have never heard of before, such as: Frederick Booker Noe II, Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle, The Shapira Family, and Bill and Margie Samuels, and their respective stories.

I found this book to be HIGHLY informative and engaging. I loved the collection of labels.
I have decided that this book does not belong on a shelf. This book belongs on a coffee table for display, so everybody I know can see it and learn something new or old, depending on how you look at it! This is a fantastic book. I enjoyed it very much.

In full disclosure I am a Boardwalk Empire junkie. Not sure what it is or why it is but the history around this era is fascinating to me. Prohibition was an ill-conceived, though well intentioned, hiccup in history that helped solidify the sanctity of whiskey in all its forms. Naturally I jumped at the chance when I found out I could write a review for The Art of American Whiskey by Noah Rothbaum. This book is rich with history, imagery and my personal favorite-recipes.

Rothbaum takes you through history beginning with the 1800’s and landing you in what he calls the New Golden Age. Each page is artfully crafted to include images culled from labels and signage through the ages and is as visually pleasing as the smoothest bourbon tastes going down. His attention to detail is clear resulting in a layout that is easy to navigate and pleasure to just flip through for the casual browser. I enjoy having this book laying around because inevitably visitors pick it up and thumb through it.

No book about whiskey would be complete without recipes, at least in my opinion. One could try but what would be the fun in that? As a ‘Manhattan’ purist I look forward to working my way through these cocktail recipes to see if I could be persuaded to change my tune. From the ‘Boilermaker’ to the ‘Presbyterian’ I intend to be committed to diligent and thorough research…and if I can remember any of it I’ll return with a post-script in the future. My guess is that they’re all gonna be good so let’s just leave it at that….

As always-I never write about things I don’t like-life is too short to dwell on the negative. I am required to let you know that I have written this review as part of Blogging for Books but I would have done this one anyway!
