The Art of the Apology is an excellent guide to making an apology. Lauren Bloom gives straight forward advice about when to apologize, what to say when you do, and what you can do if you're owed an apology but not likely to get one. I found her book entertaining to read and filled with practical advice. She covers apologizing in your personal life and at work. Like Amy Vanderbilt was to etiquette, Lauren Bloom is to making an apology. There is an art to apologizing! Knowing how to do it right is a life skill.

I enjoyed this book and believe the topic is more relevant than ever. I also read "Apology" by Simpson, which I found equally as compelling and inspirational and found on Amazon. Both books are as the reviewer states "a gem".Apology: The Importance and Power of Saying "I'm sorry"

It is recommended for those who needs to understand how an genuine apology work and how to judge a genuine apology from a cheap apology. Once you understand it, you are able to control and prevent offender from doing hurtful behavior repeatedly to you.

I recommend this book on apologies because it is methodical, makes interesting observations about apologies, and offers practical suggestions about when and how to make apologies that are more likely to be effective.

The book: (1) discusses the reasons for apologizing; (2) explains why it is advisable to think about how and when to apologize before trying to make one; (3) identifies key elements of effective apologies; (4) considers the circumstances and timing for making an effective apology; (5) explains why apologies should be tailored to the particular person or persons receiving them; (6) points out some situations when making an apology is not a good idea or extremely difficult to do; (7) highlights several common ways that apologies can go wrong or fail; (8) encourages readers to learn from their apologies; (9) describes how to accept apologies gracefully; and (10) notes reasons why making an apology does not guarantee forgiveness from the offended person.

The book is written in a very readable style, and does not require the reader to have any particular training, experience, or background to understand and follow the author's discussion, observations, and recommendations. Readers interested in more technical discussions about apologies should consider the following books, the first by a psychiatrist and the second by a philosopher: Aaron Lazare, On Apology; and Nick Smith, I Was Wrong: The Meanings of Apologies
