Editorial Reviews

2014 album from the Christian folk-rock band. The ART OF CELEBRATION herald' s Rend Collective' s third studio release and follows on the heels of their intimate live recording CAMPFIRE, an album which has remained a top seller based on the success of the radio single ''Build Your Kingdom Here.'' Rend Collective have captured the hearts of worshipers with their sense of joy and embracing the committed as well as those on the fringe. The new album sees the development and maturing of the band as writers with melodies that are sure to evolve into hymns of this generation. The band has been described as a Christian version of Mumford & Sons.

The Art of Celebration, in a number of ways, represents a critical gap in Christian worship music: artistic innovation. This CD isn't the average over-played, formulaic worship music that fills most Christian radio stations. This CD is a work of beauty that is significantly "fresher" than most of the sound on the radio today.

Primarily, this album oozes with one idea: Joy. Intense joy. Joy from what the Lord has done for us. The album is very upbeat and enjoyable to listen to. It doesn't shy away from saying Jesus' name, and it certainly makes me want to worship Him more.

That said, all the songs are unique and many are very catchy. The entire first half is simply awesome, but "My Lighthouse" is probably the best; it is poetry with Providence, and is, in my opinion, the best Christian song to emerge in the last decade at least. The off-beats and percussion give it an addictive energy, and I actually find it difficult to not tap my feet when listening to it.

I have not listened to Rend Collective's older albums, but I hear they are excellent as well. I would highly recommend this one on its' own merits.

The band is certainly talented and this album is consistent with what their fans would expect from them. For the most part, Rend Collective's style is not my favorite kind of music. It's a bit more "hipster folk" than what I'D typically listen to. However, if that's your kind of music you will find their sound to be as good as anyone within their genre. That said, they can also surprise you with the diversity of musical styles you'll hear on a single album.

The album was well worth buying, to me, for a couple of songs. My Lighthouse is just a great song. The genre doesn't matter with lyrics like that. Strength of my Heart, in my opinion, is the best track on the record. That song by itself would earn 5 stars - both for content and sound.

So, consider this to be an album worthy of the most enthusiastic 5-star review for those who love their style, and a solid 4 even from someone who normally wouldn't.

"A thousand years, A thousand tongues, are not enough to sing His praise, Boldly I approach Your Throne, blameless now I'm running home, by Your blood I come, welcomed as Your own, into the arms of Majesty" sings the stellar title track "Boldly I Approach (The Art of Celebration)" of the most incredible worship album I've ever heard, The Art of Celebration by Rend Collective, available everywhere March 17. The theme of the album is embodied by the truth of Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV): "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

You'll find yourself instantly worshipping along with the band during this album. "Joy" appropriately kicks off the celebration of what God has done as expressed in Philippians 2:2 (The Voice): "here is one thing that would complete my joy--come together as one in mind and spirit and purpose, sharing in the same love." That's exactly what this collective of believers is about who named their band based on the Scripture, "Rend your hearts, not your garments."

"Burn Like A Star" will certainly "light a fire in your heart" as the song prays "send us out in Resurrection Power" capturing the energy and sentiment of hit song "Build Your Kingdom Here" from their amazing live album, Campfire. The Mumford & Sons-like exciting music only further increases my joy in Christ.

"You are the peace in my troubled sea, My Lighthouse, shining in the darkness, I will follow You, My Lighthouse, I will trust the promise, You will carry me safe to shore" is the beautifully poetic and catchy refrain of the lead single "My Lighthouse," a guaranteed hit.

This album is full of such JOY and HOPE and sends a clear message to the hearers: Jesus is the best LIGHTHOUSE ever! He is the one we should look to when we're struggling with everyday issues, and HE is the who gets us to where we need to be if we only open our lives and hearts to Him.

But the WHOLE album is annointed!! This is music to shout to and music to worship to! Would have given it ten stars if I could.
WOW! Well done Rend Collective!

I bought this for "Lighthouse" and for several weeks thought that was the high point, but some of the other lyrics have sunk in and had me in tears, in a good way (I like to cry).

Boldly I approach Your throne.
Blameless, now I'm running home.
By Your blood I come,
Welcomed as your own
Into the arms of Majesty.

That is from my current high point. Grace never gets old.

This is truly an incredible album--currently one of my favorite Christian albums overall. I could go on and on about each song (and perhaps I might if I decide to edit this review), but I'll just briefly talk about my favorites:

- Burn Like a Star is a really invigorating and get-your-feet-moving sort of song that really does capture the idea of a burning desire for spiritual revival.
- More Than Conquerors is taken from Romans 8:37 and is a powerful defiant declaration to struggle with our sins, shame, and brokenness for the sake of Christ and by His power in us.
- Boldly I Approach makes references to Romans 8:1 as well as two hymns ("Before the Throne of God Above" and "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing") and is an incredible song that really captures the gospel and how, though we are broken, guilt-ridden, and desperately struggling against temptation and sin, we can boldly approach God's throne because of Jesus's blood shed for us and celebrate in this fact that we are free from condemnation.

For someone looking for refreshingly invigorating, deeply convicting and relatable, Scripturally-solid music, this album is for you.
