Fiancée: rich doormat portrayed as boring in bed and out
Heroine: mid-twenties; art consultant; dislikes rich guys or “suits”; masquerades as her boss to the hero and his fiancée borrowing her boss’ name and her clothes while boss is away..think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl
The H is immediately smitten with the h when he first sees her at the art gallery. He is there with his fiancée looking for artwork. He then thinks about the h constantly…even while he is having sex with his fiancée. The h doesn’t notice him because he is in a suit and dislikes rich guys. She talks to his fiancée about the artwork and ignores him. He later shows up with his buddy in jeans and hits on the h while pretending to be a poor hot dog salesman. Meanwhile, the h is still masquerading as her boss and does not recognize him as the suit with his fiancée.
As soon as they meet, they are all over each other and do it in the bathroom. At this time, the H is still engaged to his fiancée. He defends the cheating to both himself and the h and that it was okay because he is planning to break up with the fiancée. He discovered the fiancée was cheating on him with his assistant (a she) a week prior and was waiting for her to call off the engagement.
Mistaken identities on both parts cause a breakup and then a reconciliation. The first one third of the book is devoted to the H and his fiancée having sex in bed, in the shower, etc. Embedded in portions of the beginning include the h picking up random guys at the bars for an evening of sex.
It was an okay book. I liked the mistaken identity premise and thought there was a lot of potential to the story. There is little character development and lots of sex. Both characters are pretty horny and shallow. I didn’t like them too much. I liked the H’s best friend. He seem to have meat to his character even though he was always talking about sex too.
Eve Newton does an excellent job in setting the scene and developing her characters. To be honest, I really didn't like either of the main characters at the beginning of the book. But by the end, they had both matured and changed enough to make me root for them. Catherine and Matthew both lie in order to get to know each other and it ends up blowing up in both of their faces. Will they be able to get past the lies and deception in order to build a relationship? The author blends just the right amount of discussion and narrative to keep the story interesting and not dry. The story flows well and I loved how it unfolds. There are some twists and turns that make you wonder how the story will end up but not enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. This book is a standalone and does have an HEA.
This sprang to mind as I read the first few chapters. Events seemed to draw both Matt and Cat into a web of deceit, every effort to set the record straight was hindered. It was so enjoyable to witness their fears and heartfelt desires as they tried to justify their actions. Suddenly, they found themselves bound in the quicksand of major lies. All good intentions to disclose the truth gets sidetracked and the whole web of deception collapses like a house of cards. Emerging from the debris, they each try to come to terms with the fallout and face some deep inner truths. This was a great delight to see unfold with sweet characters, very engaging plot and believable situations. Would make a good chick flick movie! I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars!
I received an ARC for an honest review of The Art of Deception by Eve Newton
My first book by Eve Newton, was an easy read and the story was simple but good. The characters were well developed but the story seemed to be going in several directions quickly and then the story was over. Overall I enjoyed reading about Matthew, who pretends to not be a wealthy CEO and Cat who pretends to be more than she really is. Until everyone learns the truth.
