A revolutionary guide to acknowledging fear and developing the tools we need to build a healthy relationship with this confusing emotionand use it as a positive force in our lives.

We all feel fear. Yet we are often taught to ignore it, overcome it, push past it. But to what benefit?  This is the essential question that guides Kristen Ulmer’s remarkable exploration of our most misunderstood emotion in The Art of Fear.

Once recognized as the best extreme skier in the world (an honor she held for twelve years), Ulmer knows fear well. In this conversation-changing book, she argues that fear is not here to cause us problems—and that in fact, the only true issue we face with fear is our misguided reaction to it (not the fear itself).

Rebuilding our experience with fear from the ground up, Ulmer starts by exploring why we’ve come to view it as a negative. From here, she unpacks fear and shows it to be just one of 10,000 voices that make up our reality, here to help us come alive alongside joy, love, and gratitude. Introducing a mindfulness tool called “Shift,” Ulmer teaches readers how to experience fear in a simpler, more authentic way, transforming our relationship with this emotion from that of a draining battle into one that’s in line with our true nature.

Influenced by Ulmer’s own complicated relationship with fear and her over 15 years as a mindset facilitator, The Art of Fear will reconstruct the way we react to and experience fear—empowering us to easily and permanently address the underlying cause of our fear-based problems, and setting us on course to live a happier, more expansive future.

refreshing and worth your precious time
In a bottomless sea of "self help" garbage, this is an enjoyable and edifying read. Personally, I doubt any human can foment a truly original idea- we learn from others even when we aren't aware we are doing so- and I find other reviews that critique this book as "unoriginal" to be utterly disingenuous. Ms. Ulmer is digging into her own experience and suffering, and offering us the fruits of her labor- no easy task. Further, her translation of "old" ideas in a new way that one can more readily grasp is, in fact, more valuable than repeating "old" ideas verbatim if folks cannot connect to said ideas in their original form. Perhaps most importantly, the usual pomp of "self help" is absent, replaced by a sense of humor that is often self deprecating- no gurus here, thank you very much. While I think it usually takes time and repetition to change habits, I am certainly open to the possibility that work with her one on one might propel any one of us to a quantum leap in growth. If you enjoy having your biases blown to bits like I do, then you will love this book. If a genuine challenge makes you feel more alive, then you will love this book. If you prefer to be comfortable at all times and death-grip clinging to what you already know, then this book wasn't written for you in the first place, so don't bother reading it.

I have been fortunate to know Kristen for almost a decade. I can tell you she practices what she preaches and it works! I had been so closed in by fear that I had almost completely isolated myself from people. Using the methods of this book she was able to get myself, a 58 year old hermit, to fly halfway around the world, solo, to Kathmandu, Nepal, a city that makes me think of the wild, wild West. I then went on a Trek to Everest Base Camp. It was such an incredible experience that I went back the next year and went on a trek around the Annapurna Mountain Range. As long as I have the means I will travel as much as I can the rest of my life. I would never have done anything remotely related to these experiences had it not been for the methods she teaches in this book! Once again, she practices what she preaches and it works! She woke me to an entirely new World where the future is unlimited.

I have been blessed with a missing literary critic gene. It helps me get the message instead of getting bogged down in style. No book is perfectly written and comments that blast style without addressing the content or message sound like just another ego inflating twitter rant.

It's a great book that will mean different things to different people since we all have different relationships with Fear. If you are looking for a how-to to increase performance and reduce performance anxiety, there are concepts in this book that will help. For some with experience that are similar to Kristen's, developing a relationship with your primordial emotion and flipping fear suppression on its head might help with understanding your past and might lead to additional compassionate behaviors.

For someone who has been there, it worked for me. Thanks, Kristen.

The Art of Fear is written a bit oddly. It is angled to go along with the writer's recollections of an addiction to fear from her professional career. It has the same view as Osho's Fear, just written using modern language and connected to her story. As part biography, this book could have been stronger if it wasn't written for the speaker's circuit, but it might help some readers absorb the material more easily than reading Osho.

Firstly, I'm adding this book to the 10-books core library, which I frequent often, over and over again.

Then, Kristen has managed, small step at a time, to bring me to embrace and practice the timed-and-tested wisdom that she has so brilliantly conveyed.

The result is, and I quote one of her closing arguments: "... instead of spending your whole life fighting who you are, now you can get down to the epic, wild, uncomfortable, absurd, ignorant, delusional, and wonderful business of . . . just being who you are."

If you want to own your life, own this book. Thank you humbly, Kristen.

I'm a psychologist and I picked up this book for both professional and personal interest. I was curious to see the author's perspective from fear from a different place than my psychology-training. There are several times the author talks about this approach being unique and quite distinct from psychotherapy (or even meditation practices). However, this just isn't the case. The framework, which I like, is not that much different than what contemporary behavioral therapy is today. In addition, while I want to keep stating that I like the approach, the book is much longer than it needs to be. It is repetitive and at times rambling. Sections do not always naturally flow with each other. I appreciate the metaphors (an important part of psychotherapy currently) but there were not always in context. Overall, this book felt like a "Kitchen sink" approach to getting the information across. I do not think you need to read past chapter 9 to get everything but it is worth reading to that point.

It's easy to stay in your lane your entire life and get the expected results. Fear is something to be afraid of, the two go hand in hand. Kristen Ulmer's book challenges the reader to look at fear differently, to develop a new relationship with it, and switch lanes. Who knows where it will take you? Somewhere better, I hope. I've read the criticisms of her book, how it isn't original, etc. Whether that is the case or not (and does it matter?) her ideas are compelling, her anecdotes and words prompted "aha" moments for me, and she showed me another way of living life --- by giving the very original examples of how she has lived hers --- and the courage to look at my relationship with fear differently. I'm not a fan of self-help books, they are usually a page or two of information and 150 pages of filler that I can do without. Her book kept me interested and engaged all the way through.

I would like to speak to some of the less than favorable reviews of the book. Their perspective of the flow of the book is accurate. That’s actually the point. This is an amazing book that you do not realize is amazing while you are reading it because it is not that comfortable to read. At times it is even very uncomfortable to read. Then you put it down and come back to it because you know you have to read it if you want to know what you don't know. And you do. And you are glad you did.
If you want to read a literary masterpiece then buy a novel. If you want to understand your relationship with yourself and how to better navigate the human life journey then read this book!

This book has changed my life! We are taught that fear, anger, sadness, and other "negative" emotions are "bad" and that we should do things to avoid them. I.e. Conquer your fear rather than allow yourself to feel it and listen what it is saying to you. Same with anger...I didn't listen to what it was saying and it caused me a real problem. Kristen's methods to change this are amazing because you can start listening to these so-called negative emotions right away and the difference you feel is instant! At times I felt the book was repetitive but it's actually amazing how it helps to take it all in on a deep level. There are points in the book that I was so thankful to reach and felt, Wow, if I had put it down before this, I would really lose out. If you are suffering with anxiety, depression, anger, sadness, fear, or any recurring difficult emotions, this book will help you!

As an "adventurer" (extreme skiier, hang-glider, deep-diver…) like Kristen, I have been more than once confronted with "the fall" or even the death reality. Fear, then is not the result of imagination, a social phobia, but a sad reality. I was then interested to see how Kristen handled fear… And yes, she found ways not only to tame it… but also to use it. Thanks Kristen
