If you're a fan of the "Art of Books" you'll appreciate this book. I will say I was sort of disappointed by what was inside. I buy these art of books because I like to see raw sketches and concepts. I don't particularly favor when they show us lots of clean rendered images of stuff that you already see in game or have seen in marketing adds used in video game magazines. So while this is a cool book to see some interesting things about Gears 4. If you want to see more rough sketches and more concepts Id actually recommend the Art of Gears of War 3, its a much better look at the art and where they were coming from. Again this book is good and has some sketches and lots of cool images of characters, backgrounds, weapons and vehicles it could have shown more if you ask me. A good book overall if you're a huge Gears fan.

This book kind of feels like the campaign for Gears 4, I went through it, felt almost nothing, and moved on. The artbook is entirely formatted with the acts in the game (1-V). So, there is a very large separation between related things in game (robots, characters, designs, etc.) and most of it will have some kind of worded reference to others but without a visual to accompany. This just doesn't really work for a literal artbook. The book tries to walk you through the game, bringing stuff up as the player would get to it in game, that is not the reason artbooks exist, that is why guidebooks exist (which almost always have pictures to go along with them anyway!).
The art itself is basic landscapes and finished pieces, very little conceptual or idea finding segments. The only real conceptual pieces with legitimate off the wall brainstorming are the creature designs (not the swarm themselves but things like the pouncer, snatcher, etc.). The robots had a couple iterations but not much significant difference between them. This is absolutely not what I expect from a game with a revamp of an IP in mind. Gears 4 was supposed to be something new, that drew upon the base of 3+ previous games, so why was there so little innovation displayed in the artbook? There was a one off quote about the team taking a trip to Italy for inspiration (which can be easily seen when playing the game and book for the final outcome) but there was no sketches or record of that in this. I would have LOVED to have an entire section dedicated to straight copy and paste of every single thing the team came up with and drew randomly while on that trip. That is where the artbook of a game is supposed to come in, show up what the team actually went through to come up with the final decisions, not just the end result that is in the game. In addition, there wasn't even a real weapon section. This is Gears of War, the weapons are one of the biggest draws, and you have a single page with copy and pasted png's of the few in game weapons from a single angle. You're telling me there was no new weapon iteration or numerous types not chosen? Get out of here.
Overall, I would call this a pass for anyone but a die hard Gears 4 fan (which I don't think there are many of). Not enough substance to justify owning except to say you have it. The odds anyone would look back after one read through are basically none. Please use your Art of Gears of War 3 book for a reference on what to do in the future.

I'm actually fairly surprised at how much more this book allowed for me to appreciate the new Gears trilogy - by the explanation and added details of the DBs alone I found myself having a little more enjoyment with what was an otherwise okay game to the series. However, the tital "The ART of Gears of War 4" is a tad misleading, as the actual artistic aspect of it is relatively minor to what one may expect from an art book. Descriptive of their showcased items, yes, but not quite artsy. Really cool concept-art, though! Wish they had more of that included, honestly.

This book came a bit beat up and it wasn’t shrink wrapped like factories usually do. Other than that, great art book.

Beside's the game was badly done story wise and also those damn lootcreates (gearpacks) the Art Team did a amazing job except the SWARM Designers... these are dull and boring. Overall great artbook!
