If you do knit, most of the techniques are based on the machine knitter, however, most of the charts also work for hand knitting. Most of the uncharted techniques and stitches can be easily figured out by the advanced hand knitter.
This is not a book of patterns or a stitch library, but a book of inspiration, to get your creative juices flowing.
The entire staff of my yarn shop fought over who got to buy it!
However, the book seems to be intended for students of commercial design studios. Most of the text describes effects that can be produced using commercial (industrial?) knitting machines for knitted fabrics, including the needle setting to be used.
Some of the ideas are translatable to hand knitting, and there is a nod to this in some pages describing basic hand knit techniques.
The tone of the book is scholarly and seems at odds with the ideas and illustrations.
Overall, if you are studying commercial knitted fabric design, this is a great resource. It's of limited use for hand knit designers.

For the devoted knitter, this is a beautiful addition to your library. When my hands are tired from knitting, the next best thing is to read about the ART of knitting. Loved it.Published on March 24, 2014 by Karen's Korner

This book belongs in the Art section of a book store, NOT in a craft or knitting section. Might be something very intriguing for a gallery level fiber artist, but this book is just... Read morePublished on June 11, 2013 by mnmisser
This is a gorgeous, inspirational book. It's a "coffee table" book - full of beautiful photos of unique fabrics.
This is NOT a how-to book for hand-knitters. Read more
The value of this book is the amazing variety of swatches and the beautiful color photography .... makes you realize that your knitting machine can do much more than you realized. Read morePublished on October 17, 2008 by Gadget Fan
This book is gorgeous! It's great for inspiration, not for how to hand-knit something. You'll have to use other books (stitch dictionaries) for the stitches. But gorgeous!!!Published on June 16, 2008 by Enginerd Jones
