A wise, sophisticated, and witty exploration of the paradoxes of intimacy. (Peter D. Kramer, M.D.)
In this lively and thoughtful exploration of the difficulties and satisfactions of marriage, the author brings together a wealth of scientific facts and valuable psychological insight. The text is enriched by the shrewd, funny, touching, and sometimes devastating observations of novelists, social commentators, and struggling husbands and wives. Those working through the muddles of married life will do it better with some help from Drs. Karasu. (Viorst, Judith)
With plentiful examples and some pointed and sometimes surprising quotes, the authors cover how 'the relationship', sex, power, and communication contribute or detract from a successful marriage, marriage in the baby years, the kid years, and the adolescence decades, midlife, and marriage as a cause of illness. They close by redefining marriage. (Book News)
A perceptive, insightful, and upbeat guide to marriage and how to make it work, written with wisdom, grace and wit. Vivid anecdotes abound drawn from the author's extensive clinical practice, from classical literature and even from Sex in the City. Highly recommended for men and women at every stage of their natural journey. (Judith S. Wallerstein, Ph.D.)

READ THE LITTLE GRAY TEXT BOXES OF EARLIER PROVEN FINDINGS IF YOU HAVE FIFTEEN MINUTES TO SKIM THROUGH AND FIND THEM. THEY ARE THE REAL MEAT AND POTATOES OF USING THE WISDOM OF MARRIAGESENSE TO BE GOTTEN FROM THESE PSYCHIATRISTS. After you’ve done that then decide if this is the book you are looking for on this subject.
I have found this book informative, well researched, (look at the number of supporting references cited), and authors’ structured, detailed, and stated findings is just smartly organized. That might put some person’s to sleep, but to me it shows, these doctors devoted a lot of time substantiating each of the items mentioned in those gray boxes. I as a member of the lay public am grateful for their making the books findings, of already earlier proven facts, than than having me guess about what really is best to maintain an ongoing marriage.
This book is excellent. Anyone who says otherwise has not taken into consideration the over 45 years of shared past psychiatric and couples counseling that went into their practice before the book was written.
Take what you need and leave the rest. I for one will be contacting these two doctors if I want to get the best pre marriage and ongoing marriage counseling I can find. I respect Dr. Phil, but for my money, these are the two I’ll seek counseling from on how to maintain a marriage and work out its issues in the future with. Dr. Phil, he's great for prime time and sensation building. But guess what folks? If you haven't figured it out already, that's made for TV ladies and gentleman and not typical real life daily goings on of what are the reoccurring issues in “everyday” marriages like these two informed doctors have written about.
As marriage advisors they have won my undying admiration for just telling us your collective insights and these established findings over time. They have stated your collective findings on this subject for us in the lay public to learn something from them.
I found the earlier four star review, in its assessment realistic in its mentioning some of the factors that can be used to help in the maintenance of a marriage. I think the authors of this guide did factor what is within the power of some determined couples to be able to change over time if they decide to.
I hope anyone considering buying this book will take 15 minutes and read the gray areas cited by me, before buying the book. They are all well documented findings that are established facts by now. Make no mistake about it, it takes work to maintain a good marriage.
