For the rest of us, you have to know exactly what you're getting into. This is a beautifully bound hard-cover book that contains concept art for the three main ME games as well as some of the limited edition spinoffs. It is limited to concept art, which is the artwork that is done to design the characters, sets, costumes, weaponry, and overall look of a video game. You need to know this going in, because if you're hoping for screenshots, promotional artwork, pages from graphic novels, covers for paperback books, imagery of spinoff toys, etc. you will be extremely disappointed. Die-hard ME fans are the main market for this book, aspiring concept artists are another, and more generalized science fiction fans are the third.
That said, I really would have liked to have seen more explanatory text here to explain the decisions that the design crew made along the way. This would have been fun for fans to learn (for example) why Asari are blue, and to what degree the designs were preordained by the higher-ups within the video game company. This can be fun trivia for a fan, and it's excellent info for the aspiring concept artist. After reading through this book a few times, I still am not clear to what degree (if any) traditional hand-painting was used by any of the artists or what software tools they used or if they relied on 3-D rendering software for any of their concept art.
It's not a bad book, and since ME is such an influential style within today's science fiction art, every page of this book is really easy on the eyes. I was just left wanting much more than I got with this book.
Great book if you just want to gloss over some of the ideas behind Mass Effect. If you are looking for a deep dive into any one subject you are out of luck. This book is almost all pictures with very little narratives to describe the process and or logic behind decisions. There is some amazing art and design in this series, I could see this being expanded into a text book for Game Art & Design students with some work on the narrative part of the book.
