I remember when I was a nine-year-old boy!! When I discovered!? Yoji shinkawa art!! In Metal gear solid Playstation manual. It was so colorful His art is like 32K high definition on a OLED Display! With amazing high contrast before time!? And now 20 years later! I have it it means a lot to me! I thank God for bringing Yoji Shinkawa and Hideo Kojima to gather like brothers someday I hope I can be in the family! LOL like a little brother! The book brings back precious memories! Bonding with family members, in the past playing the game. As time moves on I could not let go.Of this art and game. If you want to know anything negative the only thing I have is Yoji Shinkawa Name is not on the book! He deserves his name on the art box! and books it’s his art! Also selecting standard shipping the experience was scary my box was damage inside the box was damaged the art box was damaged.Now the positive Amazon did a wonderful job! Replacing my damage items. Shipped it with loving care and support. Darkhorse company you’ve been around about 32 years. I think you should increase your shipping skills. I do not mean, to sound ungrateful. But you have passion! Never forget that continue, to show your passion! For art by adding, more shipping care.In like cushion in each corners. So the fans can feel like Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa. Dress as UPS driving around USA in a UPS truck delivering the art book thank you!

I pre-ordered this about six months before its release, without reading the details. I love anything Metal Gear related and just blindly ordered it as soon as i saw it. Well it just showed up at my door and I am BLOWN AWAY! This collection is absolutely amazing! It its actually a two book set - each book about 400 pages long, wrapped in a really cool slip cover that holds both books. One book is titled Studio Works and the other is titled Gallery Works.

Gallery works is everything promotional related - images from the instruction manuals, posters, finished sketches and paintings. Studio works is essentially all of the concept art and sketches. Between the two books, absolutely every piece of artwork produced for metal gears 1-4 (& peace walker) are included .

Overall, this collection is not to be missed. It is beautifully produced, the pages are thick, the printing is flawless, the binding is tight, and the presentation is on point. The art work is utterly incredible - i could look at yoji shinkawas work all day long, and thanks to this collection now i can! It is incredibly inspiring, so happy to have this in my collection!

Lovley to see some sketches by myself. Great package. When Dark Horse expressed Interest in a game I was a part of before moving over to KJP to work on Death Stranding, I knew it would be a great thing. It was, and still is due to how well made and stitch bound the book is. It doesn't have everything as thats a rooms worth of ideas and sketches and the like. But if I had to I'd probably say these are the best picks for each game. The office got these for each of us, but after leaving Konami I had no time to clear my desk in full. In which I lost my books, And a few photos.
I digress, the two include books are heavy, well bound, well made and just look beautiful. The box they come in is also great , with the two books inside you can feel.the hefty nature of the material and paper used. If you like the work of Hideo Kojima [Snatchers, Policenaughts, Metal Gear and Death Stranding series, most notably] You will love these books.

The Art Of Metal Gear Solid I-IV (as well as Peace Walker). A beautiful set of two books that comes in a sturdy, nicely designed slipcase. The set features the work of artist Yoji Shinkawa who did everything from mechanical designs, character designs to full-fledged masterpieces for the Metal Gear Solid series. You get about 800 pages of it with this set.

I LOVE Shinkawa's stuff! His loose brush work is inspiring and his designs just blow my mind. He's one of the major reasons why so many people are huge fans of the series. I've been waiting a long time for a decent and reasonably priced Metal Gear artbook. If you've been waiting too, don't hesitate, buy this NOW! Hopefully we won't have to wait long for a book with art from Metal Gear Rising. If there are books already, could someone please point me in the right direction?

A Deluxe Set Worthy of the Metal Gear Name.

This collection comes with two phone-book sized tomes packed with art from Metal Gear I-IV & Peace Walker.

The first book contains full colour art for each game, some of which hasn't been seen before, while the second showcases behind the scenes character, mech and scenery design, a great deal of which is brand new to the public.

Both books are of the highest quality and come housed in an easy access and durable folder for safekeeping. A particular nice touch is the edges of the paper having a metallic sheen to them, giving the closed pages a silvery, space age gloss.

My only complaint is there being no MGSV material to really complete the set, but since it has it's own individual art book elsewhere it's not a major issue.

If you're a fan of good gaming art this is a steal and if you're a fan of Metal Gear then you have to buy this, it's esssential.

Utterly essential for series fans

I'm utterly blown away by what's been included in this package. I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, and always obsessed over the Japan-only Yoji Shinkawa artbooks, but only ever picked up the MGS2 one. Not only does this set include everything printed in that book, with newly translated footnotes, it expands on it with material created for MGS2: Substance and The Document of MGS2. MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 and Peace Walker are all covered with that same generosity. The work is a fascinating look into each game's development. It's not just something to admire aesthetically, but there's extensive details on scrapped ideas and minor aspects of characters, locations and technology that was never covered in-game.

MGS1 is my favourite game, so I was particularly blown away by the 12-page breakdown of every joint and piece of weaponry on Metal Gear REX, all illustrated in Shinkawa's familiar, cool style. Even if you're only particularly interested in one of the games covered in these books, it's worth it. If you're not so interested in the games, but admire Shinkawa's work, it's worth it. Even if you've picked up some of the previous Shinkawa art books, but can't read Japanese, I think it's worth it. I think this set is a more exciting and valuable item for Metal Gear fans than around half of the games in the series.

Essential for fans of Metal Gear Solid

After pre-ordering almost a year ago and months of delays, I'm happy to say this book was worth the wait. It comes in a sturdy case that isn't just made to hold the books before being discarded. The two books are an excellent size and the paper is nice and thick.
I already own the original 'The Art of Metal Gear Solid' from 1999 as well as 'The Art of the HD Collection' that collects art from MGS2, 3 and Peace Walker and despite many sections being reproduced page for page, I still found a pleasing amount of new content. While pages from the previous books are reprinted here in the exact same format, it's a nice touch that a lot of the Japanese notes from artist Yoji Shinkawa and other members of the production team have now been translated into English.
As noted in another review, there is indeed an issue with pages being stuck together. Fortunately for me it only affected the Gallery Art volume on the bottom edge of a handful of pages sporadically throughout. While this is slightly disappointing, it is small enough not to detract from the artwork on the page and in my mind not worth replacement.
All in all I absolutely recommend this book if you're a Metal Gear Solid fan, and it's a must have for fans of artist Yoji Shinkawa.

I loved the collection of art and sketches, there isn't a lot in here that isn't already in prior art books, but this version has more comprehensive English translations. More emphasis and page spread dedicated to female characters compared with male in here, but doesn't matter so much if you like them more or you already have the original art books. Sadly, colour pages are ruined by the silver page edge painting which have stuck the edges of the pages together and cannot be opened without destroying the edge of the pages print.

When I per-ordered ‘this book’ I was expecting something around A4 in size with perhaps 300 pages of artwork. When I actually opened the box I found there’s actually two books. One of gallery artwork and another of studio based designs and sketches used in character development. Each book is A4+ in size and with roughly 400 pages each absolutely crammed with gorgeous artwork. If you like art books, if you like metal gear solid, you’ll love this.
