One of the very finest DVDs of its type that I have ever seen. A must for classical musicians, pianists, piano teachers and instructors, intermediate to advanced piano students, etc. I actually bought a European version in VHS format quite a few years ago, while traveling in Europe. It didn't cross my mind that this cassette wouldn't play on an American video player. So no luck ever watching it. BUT.... A few weeks ago I chanced to see if an American system DVD or VHS cassette was available on Amazon, and was delighted to find out that it was. The retail price of a new DVD of this title was an astronomical $99.00, but I got a used DVD for about $15.00, which was absolutely perfect. Wonderful old B&W footage of some of the greatest pianists of the past 100 years. I think the earliest clip dates back to the 1920s. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning from this DVD, which I have now shared with my piano instructor at the University of Georgia. I highly recommend to anyone who loves particularly classical piano.

This is an extremely entertaining compilation of performance clips and commentary on the great pianists. I could argue with some that are included on this compilation... It starts out with an ancient Paderewski giving a somewhat hackneyed performance of Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No 2, and includes some "snoozer" segments (Cortot, Backhaus, Fischer...).
But it more than earns its place of reverence within my collection, for the segments on Cziffra, Gilels, Richter, Gould, Hess, Horowitz, Michelangeli and Moiseiwitsch. (HEY! How could you NOT include Martha Argerich...??)
The commentary is entertaining and insightful (never "stuffy"). I'm very happy to own this DVD!

Having owned the videotape of this program I was pleased to get the new DVD version. It has additions to the tape. For one thing, although conducted primarily in English, there are English subtitles for those bits that are conducted in languages other than English. And there are also Japanese, Spanish and French subtitles for those who wish them. Some of the film footage is simply magnificent and extremely rare. For instance, one sees the elderly Francis Plante playing brilliantly; born in 1839, he had actually heard Chopin play! There is some tendency to cut away from music footage in order to continue the voice-over narration, and that is understandable, but it is also occasionally frustrating. Some have complained that there are only two female pianists represented - a long and impressive bit with Dame Myra Hess, and an uncredited bit underneath the credits with Annie Fischer - but then there are plenty of other male pianists who could have been included, too. The makers of the film only had two hours with which to work, so one can understand the omissions. There is a minimum of fawning, a fair amount of substantive information - both plusses. For those of us who are fascinated by both piano technique and ever-changing pianistic styles this DVD is indispensable. It was wonderful to see lengthy bits featuring, among others, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Josef Hofmann, Claudio Arrau, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, György Cziffra, Alfred Cortot, Arthur Rubinstein and to have interviews with current musicians like Sir Colin Davis, Stephen Kovacevich, Daniel Barenboim, Piotr Anderszewski, Tamás Vasáry, and Gary Graffman.

This video is a compilation of rare footage of some of the 20th century's finest pianists in performance. The performance excerpts are wondrous, while the narration is skilled and knowledgeable. The musicians who are interviewed display a finely-tuned appreciation of the featured pianists. One or two tiny objections: too many pianists are omitted (understandable, perhaps, in a two-hour video), and some of the performance excerpts are too brief. Despite those peccadilloes, the tape is a treasure that anyone who loves the piano repertoire will revere. Now how about a second (and maybe third and fourth?) volume to give Ferruccio Busoni, Rudolf Serkin, and dozens of other virtuosi, their well-merited place in the sun?

This is a really nice dvd to own if you're a pianist or plan to become one. My jazz piano teacher told me to buy this dvd and watch certain players and how they play because i wasn't using my arm correctly. Watching their movements really helped me and I'm playing the right way now! So it's worth buying! Also some great music to listen to on your television.

this is clearly 1 of the best dvd that have just about every famous pianist from the 20th century. i really like it. but the sound doesn't play at the same time with the moving picture. Meaning-horowitz pressing the middle c, wait 1 sec, then the sound of middle c is heard. i mean, it is great if i was listening to it, but when you watch you won't be able to relate the picture to the music which is rather annoying. clearly, the jerk who made this movie didn't care much for it authencity and throw together a bunch of clip that doesn't go with the sound. very poor workmanship.
buy it. you will love it. or hate it.

Marvelous record of pianism and confirmation of the thesis that Mattey made about how the human hand works. If you don't know who Mattey was, you should...

A fellow musician lent me his copy of this remarkable historical document, so I ordered it from Amazon. Unfortunately the DVD I received is coded for region 6 (China), not region 1 (USA), so none of my players will play it. This could be simply a clerical mistake on the dealer's part, of course, but China is also a leading source of pirated material. Amazon needs to tighten up oversight on its suppliers and on order fulfilment. I expect a replacement coded for region 1. I rate the item itself, based on my friend's copy, to be excellent. Amazon so far doesn't rate at all.

20th century piano playing at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2013Verified Purchase
Thia reviiews the playing of some of the best classical pianists of the 20th century, with explanattions of what made the individual pianists special from various pundits as listed above. It has the advantage that most of the footage was shot before producers had the resources available to them today. The sound, although I believe it has been enhanced, is sometimes less than perfect but this is a small price to pay for not having the fancy camera angles and frequent changes of shot we have to endure now.

Lovely DVD of 20th Century pianists

I found this very interesting and informative, and worth watching more than once. It is astonishing what some of these people can do. I feel awed and humbled. Wonderful. Also a helpful corrective to all my beginner piano pupils!
I was struck that almost all the performers were white haired males. Curious.
My copy of the DVD said Art of Violin on the actual disc, which was disappointing, but I like the violin, so I decided to watch it anyway and it turned out to be Art of Piano after all. So check it out if you have a faulty label - don't assume it is the wrong disc.

Riveting and compelling DVD on 20th C pianists
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2012Verified Purchase
The DVD 'The Art of the Piano' features great pianists of the 20th Century. The DVD is riveting from start to finish. The beauty of sound and individuality of these players is in stark contrast to what is heard today.
