About the Author

Art Stewart: The only scout ever inducted to the Royals’ Hall of Fame, Art has been an integral part of the franchise since 1969. He grew up on the North side of Chicago, walking distance from Wrigley Field, and ran his own semipro team before his 13th birthday.

He was a good enough high school player that the Hall of Famer George Sisler offered him a pro contract with the Dodgers, but Art was making too much money hustling his semipro games to take the paycut. Instead, he kept the team and started scouting for the Yankees — going full-time in 1958.

Stewart left the Yankees to help start the Royals, and was a key component in everything the franchise did from the innovative Royals Academy to building an organizational strength that was the envy of the entire industry.

One of the best-known scouts in baseball, Art is considered the model for generations of scouts who’ve come up after him. He signed more than 70 players who made the big leagues, including Bo Jackson, Johnny Damon and Carlos Beltran. The Royals were named Major League Baseball Organization of the Year four times by various publications during Art’s 12 years as director of scouting.

Sam Mellinger worked at The Kansas City Star as a sports columnist and has been recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors, Kansas and Missouri Press Associations, and Best American Sports Writing. He lives in Kansas City with his wife Katie and two sons.

I bought this book for my husband for our anniversary. He's a big Kansas City Royals fan, so I thought it would be fit the bill. I had heard that Mr. Stewart and a Royals player, Perez, would be at Rally House to sign the book, and initially I had planned to have my husband get the book autographed. It turned out that he had to work that day, but it doesn't even matter. Usually my husband only takes a book to read when he takes his mom for doctors' appointments, but this book is so good that he has actually been reading it at home--when he could be doing other things instead of reading. It must be interesting!

Some fascinating back stories of stars like Bo Jackson and George Brett. I've been a Royals fan since their beginning so, naturally the book was of interest to me. I think many other baseball fans will also enjoy reading it. It's like sitting at a table and sharing a beer or two with the author while he shares a lifetime of experiences. His accumulated knowledge is related in a friendly, conversational manner. The stories and his observations are interesting and make me wish we could really be sitting together so I could ask him many, many questions.

The old scout missed a few

Can't believe nobody else has commented on the sloppy editing. He has Thurman Munson winning the MVP Award in 1970. Sorry, that's Rookie of the Year, slight difference. He has Billy Martin arranging a tryout for Ron LeFlore in 1993. Nice trick there, having Billy come out of the grave. In the chapter where he talks about Hank Bauer, there's a picture to go with it — of Ralph Houk. The picture is of Houk, and the caption identifies the guy as Houk, but the rest of the copy in the caption clearly refers to Bauer. This kind of carelessness really undermines the credibility of this book, especially coming from a scout who's supposed to be known for his attention to detail. I'm not saying he's not a great scout. I'm sure he is. And I'm not saying this isn't a good book. It's not bad. But still ....
