The basics of seeing street photography

This is a short course on how to get started in the enjoyable pastime of street photography. It is worth looking at the basics every once in awhile, even if you are an experienced street shooter. I liked the chapter about mindfulness. I know other very accomplished photographers who practice Buddhism and mindfulness. Taking in a scene in one gulp and making a photograph of it in a few seconds requires awareness and being in the moment.

If you are thinking about street photography this is a good book to think about the essence of it rathe than a list of techniques.

The only drawback to this book is that it is very short.

I met Judith about 10 years ago through Unique Photo. She was starting this class on composition in your photography. Well it was an eye opening class. I remember we were in Grand central and shooting. I was busy thinking of iso, f-stops and shutter speed. Took a few pictures and went to show them to her. Judith told me get out of my head and think of the composition of the image. She said “I don’t even care if it’s in focus, get the shot.” She was right. That was my first class. Over time she taught me the skills to capture really interesting images that people would more like to see. She made me a better photographer exponentially. I will always be thankful for her guidance. This book captures what she taught me plus much more. I will always be learning from Judith and I thank you my friend. So glad you are sharing this with the world.

The Art of Seeing In Street Photography by Judith Farber - Parts of the book was a refresher for me. I had already knew the principles of composition. However, it was good to renew my mind to look at my images with these principles in mind. The book also mentions the value of receiving and giving critiques. I had never had a critique until Judith Farber critiqued some of my images. She is thorough, informative and non judgemental in her approach. The aim is to use the advice to draw out your personal vision. I highly recommend this book for photographers.

This very short and small book could be nice if it hadn't been a rather agressive advertisement of the author's photo critiuqe sessions. I may also mention typographic problems (like some lines are condensed with letters, and some lines below are ok) and some photos being so small that you can't see anything (I'm about the last pages with references to some famous photographs; Author's own photos are visible)

Judith Farber’s little gem teaches the lay photographer – you and me – about creating a visual story of street photography with an emotional impact. She writes in spare and reader-friendly prose, including lots of quotes from famous photographers. The chapters take us step-by-step to creating composition, background, lines and angles, capturing emotions in a photographic story and being present in the moment. Each chapter is illustrated with her photographs, a review section and exercises for the reader. Caution: You must know how to use your camera. This is not a course on technique. The Art of Seeing is a small book with a big heart. Judith Farber’s passion for photography and mindfulness come across clearly and she invites us, the readers, to find our passion and presence of mind as well. Given the abundance of information on photography in books, magazines and the Internet, I’d say this informative little book is a big winner.

I have recently been collecting books on street photography, and street photographers. I've been a stret photographer fr a good few years, and it's always good to get an insight into the genres that interst you, from other perspectives, it's how you learn and grow as a photographer. This book is a good effort and introducing someone to the ephemeral genre of street photography, some nice exercises. what lets it down are the images chosen to be contained within the book. I'm sorry tp say that were I seated before a light box with the contact sheets of these images, most would have a big red grease pencil cross on them. If you want to inspire someone to go out and shoot in what is possibly one of the hardest genres of photography to master, you need to include images that will do exactly that, and for me that's where this little book fails I'm afraid.
