The closet shaves I ever get are when I use the Pre-Shave Oil first

Ask any barber or professional, they'll tell you the secret to a truly close shave is the Pre-Shave Oil. At first it seems odd that you should actually wash your face first, then dry it completely before you put on the Pre-Shave Oil. I guess that prepares the face and gets rid of any unwanted dirt or face oils. Then lather up with your favorite shave cream / brush. The Oil under the Shave creme is definitely noticeable on the first pass. The Pre-Shave Oil also allows you to set your razor at a more aggressive angle for a much closer shave.
I use this with a Double Edge Safety Razor (Merkur Futur) and I'm always amazed how close the shave is. Highly recommended. I chose "unscented" so I don't complete with my after shave/cologne.

The best thing I can say about this oil is I know when I've forgotten to use it because my skin feels harsher after shaving without it. The oil makes my skin soft and pliable for the razor. No cuts or burn. The scent is mild and pleasant. A little goes a long way so it's a great value.

It's always great when you find a personal care product that's perfect for you. My fear is Art of Shaving will change the formula one day, like what happens with so many other good products that I find.

Strong, unpleasant odor despite being “Unscented”

I used to use the Lemon Art of Shaving products, including the Lemon Pre-Shave Oil. I really liked it and have bought it a few times over the last couple years. When I ran out a month ago, I tried to buy more but couldn’t find Lemon—I settled for unscented, and didn’t really mind transitioning to something without a fragrance.

But “Unscented” is the wrong word for this product—“no fragrance added” might be true, but this definitely has a strong odor. It smells like the old kitchen cabinet that stores all your spices, but with everything removed from it. Kind of musty and pungent. It’s pretty strong, too—it changed the way my brush smells, and overpowers most fragrances of shaving cream I’ve used (I’m currently trying the Taylor of Old Bond Street sample pack). For an “unscented” pre-shave oil, this sure has a lot of scent.

Other than the fragrance, it works fine. Just like the other pre-shave oils. It makes the shave smoother and closer and less irritating. It’s just... smellier.

Overall, I don’t recommend it. If your shave oil is going to have a smell anyway, I recommend picking a product that is deliberately designed to smell a certain way. Anything is better than “mom’s old spice cabinet”—even Sandalwood.

I am a woman. My husband talked me into giving this product a try due to my sensitive skin when it comes to shaving. I must say, out of all my years of shaving, I have never had such a close shave without irritation. I love this product! I think I may just have to dab into my husband's stash from now on! I don't write reviews often so this says a lot coming from me. Oh and my husband loves it too. He's been using it for about 2 1/2 years now. I am mad that I am just discovering its greatness now.

Best scent ever

Not gonna lie, I just buy this stuff for the scent. It’s one of my favorites. And the irony of it being called unscented is not lost on me. But it most definitely has a scent and like I said it’s my favorite. I’m not so good at scents that I can tell you exactly what it smells like but to me it’s a little like leather and cloves mixed together. Not sure how else to put it. And the cloves smell is more complementary and not the predominant of the two. Hope that helps.

First, this product is great. It keeps your skin soft and protected and, when used with a good cream, creates a clean, close shave. It's unscented, but has a pleasant natural scent from the oils.

That being said, the price is kind of ridiculous for 1 oz (or 2oz, or any of the offered sizes) of castor oil and olive oil mix. You can buy a large bottle of organic castor oil (enough for many travel size and daily use bottles) for less money.

I own the 1 oz for travel and also bought the roughly 2oz bottle for every day use, but will likely refill with pure castor oil to save money.

I was hoping for an unscented pre-shave oil as I'm trying a sampler pack of shaving creams. This oil has a definite scent, which one review, I read after purchase :(, described as a hybrid of eucalyptus, pine and clove. To me the scent is leans more towards clove. (FWIW my wife hates it.) The oil is very thick and remains on the skin even after shaving is complete. Disappointing, and I doubt I'll use the rest of it.

I'm beginning to think I really don't need to use pre-shave oil, having done so for several years now. I've begun whipping my shaving cream to a lather directly on my face and don't notice any increased difficulty or "pain" when not using the oil, which has a tendency to introduce a sticky coating to my sink in any case. It's best function probably is in trapping moisture in your beard bristles if you shave having only washed your face. After a hot shower, this doesn't seem necessary. I don't have a particularly tough beard, though. Only average, I'd say.

The Art of Shaving system is inexplicably unavailable in the UK except through resellers, even though it is Gillette's premium shaving brand.

This stuff is truly excellent - all of it. If you travel to the US buy a full set and then top-up using these resellers. The products last for ages (e.g. 10+ months for the shaving cream) and so are actually as cheap as the cheap products you can buy.

Use sparingly and you will get 3+ months out of this tiny bottle of oil.

My shaving system used to involve pre-shave oil. I thought I'd try it again, but wanted an unscented regimen. Bought this with the cream. Nothing wrong with the cream.

The oil however, is scented (be-in naturally, or artificially). It has a slightly above mild scent of what I'd describe as spice/bohemian. As a product, it does what it's supposed to; oil is easy to use and helps my blades glide. However the scent remains for a loooong time, and for that it defeats the purpose of the purchase. So I wont be using it anymore.

Not scent free - razor clogging

This shaving oil is OK. It's thicker than other oils I've used in the past, which sounds good in theory, but presents a problem with razor clog. While there's no scent added, it carries the smell of the oil products used - kind of a tea-tree oil like smell. The oil stays on well throughout a 3 pass shave, but there is a residue that needs a good wash off when you're done shaving, more so than other pre-shave products I've used. I probably won't buy this again because of the scent and the issues with razor clog.
