The above entry entitled "frightening" is as hollow and unsubstantiatied as it is vague. I have never written a review before. But I fear that the above review may actually be believed or taken by someone as sufficient cause not to purchase this book. And what a shame that would be! Jones' book is a well-spring: of wisdom, depth, insight, literary brilliance, ecumenical spirit, practical suggestions, and more. I found it illuminating, refreshing, paradoxical, and altogether Spiritual-- and I am not a professional spritual director. In any event, I highly recommend it.

This book offers a general overview of spiritual direction and lots of practical information. Since the author's intention is not clear, it may confuse readers who think this is all the information needed to use a pastor position to move into spiritual direction. With so many qualified training programs for spiritual directors just a mere read of this book would be insufficent. The chapter on Church Growth and Spiritual Direction which states spiritual direction should only be led by the pastor, minister, or clergy (due to their ego being challenged) denies the gift of spiritual direction in laity and does a grave disservice if the pastor does not have the gift of holy listening, this belief unfairly promotes the idea that the office confers the charism. I would encourage the author to rewrite some of the chapters with an update of what is happening in the universal church today.

This is a must read for anyone considering or in the process of spiritual direction. Also a great resource for clinical counselors and professionals who may not understand the unique resource of spiritual direction for self or to recommend to others.

Having expected a solid approach to spiritual direction I was frightened to read of the continual overlap of significant clinical issues 'treated' in direction. This book could be useful for a trained professional Christian counselor, but it does a serious disservice to anyone seeking to learn about spiritual direction. The boundary issues alone would relegate this book to a class on lawsuits in the ministry! Using this book as a resource for both information and practice on spiritual direction does a great disservice to the many trained directors who recognize and maintain the boundaries between clinical work (treatment) and direction.
