Part of my fascination has been in the concept art and minor stories developed for the films, characters, places, and the machinery that makes this space opera so grandly amazing, but at the same time believable. The Art of Star Wars books, as a series, has become something of a minor obsession of mine, and this latest book is no exception.
Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of sketches and full color artwork, this book is a masterpiece of unfolding a film's journey from concept to finished work, all through the work created by dozens of artists to give life to the end of the Skywalker Saga. Its pages clearly unfold in chapters regarding the various aspects of its production; character and costume concepts, aliens, droids, and the set pieces of the worlds explored in the film, all of them breathtaking in their own right. It is in my opinion worth every penny you might spend on such a book, and will become a cherished item in my collection, and as a fan-based costume designer, one I will refer to countless times.
A must-have for fans of the Star Wars saga.
The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is a great addition to my previous collection of these same art books by the author/publisher. What's presented was exciting to see, as I love these behind-the scene and concept renderings of movies. This book doesn't disappoint in the information provided either. Most of the panels get a description of what's being presented, which was nice to read.
This book was originally slated for a December 2019 release date, and I had it originally pre-ordered. However, the publisher delayed the book an additional 3-months and as such I cancelled my pre-order. I personally viewed this publishing delay as a good thing, and my assumption was that additional material from the film might possibly be added to it. All too often what happens with these art books that release along it's companion film is that material can be missing; This is most likely due for the fact of not spoiling story elements. WHile I've always understood this, I've always felt it hurts books like this... as fans such as myself want to see that stuff. It's unknown to me for the reason of the initial publishing delay, but it finally released in March 2020 It seems that nothing was added to the initial page count though.
The biggest disappointment in this book is two-fold. For one, the first thirty pages are filled with art from the The Last Jedi movie! While that material is wonderful, and I loved what I saw, it's certainly not related art to The Rise of Skywalker at all--except that it's Star Wars of course.
The second disappointment is the absolute & complete absence of any Darth Sidious renderings, Dath Sidious' life-sustaining apparatus, the planet Exegol, The Sith Eternal, The Sith Citadel, The Final Order fleet & accompanying Xyston-class Star Destroyers, the Sith Wayfinder , Dark Rey, or any art relating to the space barrier to navigate to Exegol. While these were MAJOR story related elements and were meant to be a huge surprise for film audiences, the delay in book publishing was assumed by many (including myself) that this material was hopefully being added to it; As most of these book are generally missing spoiler-related story art.
I want to reiterate that what's published in this book is absolutely excellent, and I really love it. Truly. I certainly recommend this book to any Star Wars art fans, fans of the film in general, and collectors of the previous art books in this series/collection. The author doesn't disappoint in his work at all, and I've always been impressed with it. I give it two thumbs up!
Addendum: There's enough missing story-related material for the author and publisher to make a second art book on The Rise of Skywalker actually. Not kidding. It would be great to see further Sith related story board material, pre-concept art, or even final-concept art by Lucasfilm & ILM studios. Here's to hoping that happens!
The rest of the arts are worthwhile to look over and over again. Most of the concepts I'm seeing, I feel would've been awesome in the movie. Even Kylo has his own Star Destroyer. And the Star destroyer fleet factory made like the First Order symbol would've been so cool to see in a movie. Overall the whole idea of Kylo Ren and the First Order as being the main threat in the movie would've been ALOT better than Palpatine and the Final Order. And the artbook clearly shows it. So thank you, Phil, for sharing it with us.
The only problem I have with this book is a lack of Duel Of the Fates art concepts. I assumed they delayed the release date just to add the DOTF arts concepts in the book but I guess I was wrong. I was looking forward to it and it's a shame not to see it as being part of the collection. But the arts that were in the book did show somewhat alternative ideas than what the movie has shown as I explained above, so it was not a huge loss, I think.

Absolutely ZERO mention of Darth Sidious. Barely any exegol, no cloning chambers, no sith eternal.
Liked seeing more about Kylo on Mustafar but it was all cut from the movie.
The Luke and Leia training should have featured longer in the movie as should the Death Star fight.
This book was delayed remember, and they still didn’t include the art for the final product.
This whole project was a mess. In fact, this whole trilogy was a mess.
Disappointed.

Anyway regardless of what you think of the Disney made sequel trilogy it's a safe bet that anyone should be able to look at all this beautiful artworks and conceptual pieces from any of these movies and appreciate for what it is as artwork and drawings! For this set of books The Art of The Force Awakens was the definitely the best of the bunch.
My real gripe with this book is that it's frustratingly all over the place and doesn't even cover any of the main plot points or even give reference to them. For example there is no concept artwork of even reference to Emperor Palpatine. As the main and ultimate villain to the entire Saga It would have been great to see the thought process and designs involved in bringing him back. I feel so much could have been covered conceptually or briefly shown at least being the final act. Even just to graze over.
A real shame, was so excited to get the book but did feel underwelmed with overall final content.

Very disappointed I’ll not be pre ordering Star Wars any more.
