I assume at the time of writing this it was perhaps groundbreaking, but it seems in modern times to be a common sense treatise. It is only 32 pages. It is small like a pocket constitution. I read it because I knew a decent amount on Dewey, but had absolutely no knowledge of Horace Mann from my Early Education days.
I chose 2 stars not because I disagree with anything in this treatise, but that it offers very little to the reader. The contents are the basis of modern academia; ie- educators should be knowledgeable in the subjects they teach, there should be order, wasted time should be avoided, etc. Unless one is a collector, I really don't see the point in this book being valuable to the general educator. I was disappointed that there weren't any philosophical gems to take away from reading it.

This is a great read for teachers at all levels. It is great that ideas of an education reform plan from over a century ago is still relevant in today's school system.

Good read if you're looking for Horace Mann's thoughts on the teacher's role in the classroom. This book does not discuss Mann's thoughts on universal public education.

Easy, insightful read. Shocking views at times, but expected due to time written. His views were clear, though, and so it's easy to follow and comprehend. Recommend this book to anyone studying the early minds in education.

Projects a classic view of education which forms the basis of a well-run school. Concisely written and full of wisdom. Wish it was longer.
