"Make no mistake about it: the art world, the traditional art world is over." --Douglas Rushkoff

About the Author

Brian McCarty is a Memphis-born photographer currently living and working in Los Angeles. McCarty studyed at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and the Benetton-supported creative research center Fabrica in Treviso, Italy. According to McCarty, "About the time I was supposed to grow up and stop playing with toys, they transitioned into subjects for my photography." In the twenty years since, his toy photography has been exhibited internationally and seen via commissioned projects for clients such as Rockstar Games, Cartoon Network, MTV, and Kidrobot. In addition, McCarty spent nearly four years as in-house photographer at Mattel.

McCarty's postmodern integration of concept and character has earned his photography a prominent position in the growing Urban Vinyl / Art-Toy movement. McCarty is featured in several books chronicling the artistic movement such as Vinyl Will Kill, Dot Dot Dash, and Toys: New Designs from the Art-Toy Revolution. McCarty's work has earned notable praise from such places as Bizarre Magazine, L'Uomo Vogue, ABC World News, FHM Germany, and XLR8R Magazine.

Art-Toys is a great coffee-table book. McCarthy's work is very recognizable and my guess is many people are fans and don't even know it. The book is filled with great pictures and his concepts/setups are second to none. Some pages are blank, holding just the name of the picture on the opposite page, so I do wish there were more pictures or more detail. I wish he'd share more of his methods ore stories around each shot in those blanks spaces. On the other hand, the presentation is clean, professional... arty. If you like art toys or photography, this is a great choice, and an absolute must-have for any fans of McCarthy's work.

I thought that this was going to be a book about the Art-Toy scene and artists, but it's so much better than that. Rather than some catalog of toys and wordy text, the book is filled with wonderfully narrative photos that say more about the designer toy movement than a 1000 essays could. The photographer isn't so much documenting the scene as much as building upon it, yet the history and conceptual explanations are all there. The captions at the end are more like diary entries that not only explain the nuts-and-bolts process of making the photos, but also what it was like to collaborate with the artists behind the toys. McCarty is like Robert Frank with the Beats, although instead of hanging out and sharing inspiration with Kerouac and Ginsberg, he's chilling with Biskup and Baseman, Ryden and Visell. There's nothing else like this, and it speaks to exactly what is happening now in the art world. The preface by Rushkoff also needs mention and praise. As a relative outside to the scene, he was able to articulate the relevance of the designer toy scene better than I've ever read. Just an overall amazing book and collection of work.

I'm a big fan of designer toys and when I saw this book pimped on Vinyl Pulse I decided to check it out. Glad I did. The photos are gorgeous and quite entertaining. There are little blurbs in the back to give a little background on each photo, including the name of the toys and the designers (in case you ever want to try and hunt one down). Regular price is bit steep, which is why I backed off of a 5 star review.

Fans of designer vinyl will get a big kick out of this book, as will non-fans, even though they'll wonder why you bought a book of pictures of toys.

I've followed McCarty's work for some time now, but even so, this collection blew me away. Visually stunning photography that is among the most creative I've seen. Was also really fun to get an "insider's" view of what goes into making the shots. I would put it out on my coffee table for all to see, but I don't want anyone messing it up! Will probably order a 2nd copy just for that reason. This book deserves to be on display.
