A revolutionary new training method―using the easy “purposeful walk”―for a fully trained dog in as little as 6 weeks!
The Monks of New Skete, longtime breeders of German shepherds and renowned dog trainers of all breeds, have codeveloped a new training technique. In this book, the monks and Marc Goldberg, who pioneered the approach, offer a leap into the future using a game-changing tool: the remote electronic collar. The Art of Training Your Dog presents their compassionate and efficient system for the first time, with background and advice on choosing the right collar.Using a light touch―one that many humans can’t even feel―at just the right moment, helps to focus a dog’s attention. The authors help you create effortless teaching moments that tie into your dog’s natural pack instincts and help strengthen the bond with your dog.
In as little as just 6 weeks, most pups will master skills like great leash manners; obey commands such as "sit", "down", "stay", and "place"; stop troublesome behaviors; and play safely off-leash with consistent recall. 100 color photographs- Print length280 pages

The Purposeful Walk
The keystone of our program is a deliberate and structured exercise we call the Purposeful Walk. During a Purposeful Walk, your dog walks at your side with her head, neck, or shoulder (depending on your and her preference) close to your left leg. As Pack Leader, you are in charge of determining the following critical factors even for your little pack of two:
- The pace or speed of the walk
- The direction we go
- Which distractions we ignore and which we engage with

― Karen Terio, DVM, PhD
"Finally, a well-structured, informative, and effective training guide to using an e-collar gently. A must for the new dog owner, as well as trainers who want to brush up on their skills using the latest technology."
― Wendy Volhard, author of Dog Training for Dummies
"We first heard about the Monks of New Skete when a friend suggested their books to help us raise our sons. It worked! Their newest, The Art of Training Your Dog, is my favorite. Its very clear, step-by-step process has helped us tame our soulful, 60-pound dog Becky into a thankful, loving addition to our family."
― Mandy Patinkin

My first disappointment in the book is how the author carries on and on and on before getting to the point and repeats himself over and over again. It's almost like what he could have said in 50 pages he was told needed to fill 200.
My second disappointment came when Marc finally got around to describing the Bill Koehler style "purposeful walk." The dog goes on leash, handler starts walking, does a right about turn, the dog gets jerked into position and the best the handler can do is quietly say "good." What happened to the valuable "markers" and true verbal reinforcement to reassure and re motivate the dog. Remember, your voice is your most powerful training tool. Use it to reassure or scold, or calm, or motivate. I can see most sensitive dogs reacting to Marc's approach with ears back and tail between their legs and hating the sight of the leash.
I was too disappointed to read any farther.
I could detail more, but why? Buy the book!
Two hundred and seventy-five pages are mostly delegated to teaching both general dog training and specific e-collar training technique. The result is solid dog training made faster, with greater reliability, and with less stress or aversion, than ever before.
If Larry Krohn's 75-page book is the basic manual that should come with every e-collar sold (and it should be), this is the full e-collar training program that every dog-owner can -- and probably should -- follow.

I'm a true believer!!
Most humane way to train, connect and live with your dog.
My good dog is turning into a GREAT dog - right before my eyes!!
Amazing book.
Trust Marc Goldberg and the Monks of New Skete!!!
For those who are against or on the fence about ecollars, sure they can horrible tools when you don't know what you're doing. I beg you to keep and open mind and READ THIS BOOK. And get your hands on one of the quality devices recommended here for training, test it on yourself! It's not painful, it's not scary, it just feels a bit weird. It's completely humane and can be an extremely gentle way to train!
Resources like this book are invaluable. Dog owners and trainers only become better by studying this training plan and following it closely. Dogs lives can be saved with this information! I myself have a fear aggressive dog who would have been euthanized had I not taken her in. Ecollar training has saved her. This book has expanded my skill set to continue helping her through her immense trust issues.
Fight the stigma. Show the world the truth of what an ecollar can do when used with knowledge, and used artfully. And enjoy the freedom and trust you'll find for your own dog when you do 🙂
