Antoine-Henri Jomini was the most celebrated writer on the Napoleonic art of war. Jomini was present at most of the most important battles of the Napoleonic Wars. His writing, therefore, is the most authoritative on the subject. "The art of war, as generally considered, consists of five purely military branches,-viz.: Strategy, Grand Tactics, Logistics, Engineering, and Tactics. A sixth and essential branch, hitherto unrecognized, might be termed Diplomacy in its relation to War. Although this branch is more naturally and intimately connected with the profession of a statesman than with that of a soldier, it cannot be denied that, if it be useless to a subordinate general, it is indispensable to every general commanding an army." -Antoine-Henri Jomini

Item was exactly as described and super fast service. Would definitely buy from this seller again.

Incredible! I wish this was required reading for young readers! Too many young adults have no clue of history and the way problems were solved, especially in war times! Their response to war is not to have any...not to engage. But circumstances happen where war is inevitable! To just lay down and take abuse is NOT an appropriate response...ever! This isn't about turning the other cheek. It's about winning a war so you can get on with life, with minimal strain on people! Awesome book!!

Discussion of this paperback version. The book is obviously a must-read for anyone interested in military or diplomatic history.

The difficulty with this edition is the absence of Jomini's maps. Without those maps/drawings/illustrations it is difficult to take away 100% of this classic. However, this version is better organised and certainly more readable to a modern individual than, e.g., the special edition. But since the special edition has Jomini's maps/illustrations it should be used in conjunction with this far more readable edition.

Bottom line: buy this edition along with one of the harder to read editions that has Jomini's maps/illustrations.

The excised material is informative, but Price's introduction isn't really worth reading. He says Jomini is unclear, and cites "according to legend" as proof, when I have found Jomini to be one of the clearest writers I have ever read. Like the philosopher Spinoza, when Jomini introduces a term he promptly defines it. The actual text is little more than a reprint of the 1862 West Point translation, but with some spelling errors introduced, and at least one misquote (p. 110, "wherever a titan can set hs foot; titan should be man). It is truly useful if you have a second book on Napoleonic battles, and good for any wargamers, and cheaper than the Greenhill Books edition.

I chose this rating because the US military talks a lot about Clausewitz, yet it practices Jomini. I figured the way to learn more was to read what many consider the best translation of Jomini's The Art of War. As I was reading the book I began to wonder how influential his Treatise on Grand Military Operations was on his observations during the Napoleonic Wars. I wonder if what he observed changed or mitigated his original work. Unfortunately the Treatise has yet to be translated.

I own a paper copy of this book and enjoyed it so much that I wanted an electronic version to have with me when I travel. The book isn't the easiest read in the world and is, perhaps, something you have to read more than once to fully understand and appreciate it.

The Art of War (which I own several versions and copies)
I believe should a primer for all people who wish to be in business
conduct relationships of any type and in general to be in this world.

The process is simple, everyone is trying to make this planet a great place a FOR THEM to live
you need to be aware of the implication of surface and deep structure of language, of actions and of intention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has the maps missing from all other versions of this work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2020
For some reason all other editions of de Jonimi’s work, both free to download and printed ones, seem to be missing the maps that are referred to in the text. This edition has the maps.

As an outline of strategy as observed by a close aide to Napoleon Bonaparte it’s pretty much essential reading for anyone with an interest in the military history of that era. Including things such as where to locate depots and how to pick a direction of march based upon making sure they can be accessed. It’s not an exciting work, but it is fascinating and far more use for understanding the practicalities of campaigning and strategy in the pre-modern era than the more popular Sun Tzu or Clauswitz. De Jomini was also one of the authors just about every West Point educated general of the American Civil War was familiar with and learned from.

Other than having his name stuck on it “Andy McNab” seems to have nothing to do with the book beyond his name being used for advertisint/publicity purposes. The text is the same as other editions.

The print is rather small, but readable and at this price buying it just for the maps makes sense.

3.0 out of 5 stars An improvement on previous versions but the text in the figures is mostly illegible
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 2016
In June 2013 I downloaded a different free version of this work (still on sale as “Précis de l'art de la guerre. English”) which proved to be fatally flawed as all 42 figures were missing. This version is essentially the same 1862 translation – plus a few minor additions – but improved by the inclusion of the figures. Unfortunately, no attempt has been made to adapt these for the Kindle: consequently they are all far too small and the text within them is hard to read on a PC screen and largely illegible on a Paperwhite (see for example figures 17 to 27 in Chapter VII). The table of contents has been simplified by removing the text describing the chapters and all references to the individual numbered Articles that make up the chapters; this makes it harder to locate specific parts of the book to which one may wish to refer.

This remains a very useful historical text and it is, of course, well worth the price. However, if you want a free and unflawed ebook edition the only solution I currently know of is to download the Project Gutenberg version and edit the resulting files until you have an acceptable result.

I was surprised to open this book and find that the quality of the print is very bad. It looks like someone has photocopied another copy of Art of War and slapped a cover on it to sell as their own. A couple of pages I found had dark ink marks throughout the text making it hard to read. I've also found duplicate pages.

I've included a couple of images as an example, but for such a famous body of work to be treated so haphazardly is disappointing to say the least.

Buy another version that at least respects the material it contains.
