Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Like a visit to a single museum that happens to house all the major works from all the major movements in art, architecture, and visual and decorative arts, this hefty tome lives up to its title. From pre-history to present day, cave paintings to computer art, it delivers on its promise to bring together "art from every age and from every corner of the world." In 720 pages and more than 2,200 color illustrations, this includes, in addition to the traditional disciplines, fashion, advertisement, performance art and theater, and computer-generated virtual art. Readers can research, peruse, study, or simply flip through the history of art, arranged geographically and chronologically and placed in social and historical context. Call-out boxes focus on particularly important features of the period, culture, or environment under examination, and summary timelines highlight whole chapters in a few pages and break up running text on each page. This makes for busy pages, chock-full of textual and visual information, but if anyone can successfully present too much information, it's Dorling Kindersley. There's even a section on the aesthetic importance of nouvelle cuisine, a late 20th century style of preparing and presenting food. You can't get that in Gardner's.

From Library Journal

Translated from Arte storia universale, which was published in Italy in 1997, this is an attempt to reformat the narrative approach found in Janson, Gardner, and other one-volume surveys. The result can best be described as "sound bites," brief 50- to 500-word discussions of artists, topics, styles, and historic moments, presented via multiple columns, text boxes, time lines, and the like. The unsigned introduction's claim to have "combined the art of the Old, New, and developing worlds into a continuous narrative" is not quite true; the design instead fragments the text, which is hard to focus on or even find among all the visuals. Despite a number of uncommon images, these visuals tend to be small and often garish. Multiple authorship (by more than 25 Italian writers) leads to further disjunction, although most of the text reads well enough, considering. The book does deliver its promised weighting toward modern and contemporary art, but the glossary and two-page bibliography are inadequate. Stay with Janson or Gardner.?Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Lib.

As an Artist, I find this book irresistible. As someone studying Art History, this book is phenomenal. This book is packed FULL of amazing information. It's divided into times, starting with Prehistoric & Ancient Art. Then Hellenic & Italic Civilizations, followed by The Ancient World From the Roman Empire to the Fourth Crusade. Next is An Art for Europe, Asia and Africa, then From Late Antiquity to the Romanesque. The Artistic Cultures of Asia & Africa. From the Great Cities of Europe to the Four Corners of the World. The Triumph of the City. Baroque & Rococo; the City & the Court. Artistic Cultures of Asia and the Americas. Art, Commerce & Industry, The 18th & 19th Centuries. Art Styles in the Industrial 18th Century. A Crisis of Tradition & the Birth of Contemporary Art. Developments in the 19th Century. New Trends in the 19th and 20th Century. The Art of Africa & Oceania. Art of the 20th Century. A Revolution in the Arts. Postwar Developments & Contemporary Art.

Each section is full of information and pictures, and information about the pictures. The details are (seemingly) endless. There's things I knew, and things I didn't know. Details about the Artist from each time fills each section. Little tidbits of information that I've never heard before just waiting to be discovered. A small biography of each Artists life. Information about their work. Details about the times. Why things were, or what makes a Piece important, or how it's viewed, or what the Artist was thinking or feeling when they drew it. What the picture really means. The different forms of art. The difference in the different forms of art. Information on Impressionism vs Neo Impressionism, Expressionism, Avant-Gardes, Romanesque Art vs New-Romanesque, Neo-Dada, Gothic Art vs Neo-Gothic Art, Cubism vs Neo-Cubism, Neo-Baroque vs Baroque... My goodness, this book has it all.

This book has 720 color pages. Each page is stuffed with information just waiting to be discovered. If you enjoy art, if you're learning art, if you're teaching art, if you want your kids to appreciate art, if you just want a really cool book, pick this book up. Find a copy of it somewhere, through a seller, on eBay, I don't care where, this book is a must have on every book shelf, every coffee table, in every studio, in every home. This book is pure genius. You'll look at it again and again. Over and over. It's fascinating. You'll learn something new. Your kids will learn something new. And you'll be delighted.

I'm afraid I made a mistake with this book. I had really expected an art book with some text, but it feels more like a textbook with some art. There are a great deal of images in this book, but most of them are quite small (less than a quarter page). I also found the choices of what pieces to include were lacking. Some artists are covered in multiple locations (some deserve this... others not so much in my opinion) and others are not mentioned at all (No Rockwell?). As another reviewer stated, there is a great deal of nudity. This isn't really a problem in my mind, but there is a lot.
Overall, this book is probably great for some people. I was planning to use it for homeschool art history (second grade and beyond), and I may be able to utilize it for that purpose someday, that day is not today.

We're using this along with Art in Story. It's an excellent resource when the library doesn't have what I need.
